Spacey And Men’s Mag Are Definitely On The Outs

Compiled By Staff Writer Dan Web

The question is not whether actor Kevin Spacey is gay; he’s not saying, and it’s really nobody’s business anyway.

The question is whether writer Tom Junod, whose Esquire magazine profile of the actor implies that the Oscar-winning actor is gay, was “dishonest and malicious.”

That’s what Spacey charges, adding that Esquire “has made it abundantly clear that they have now joined the ranks of distasteful journalism, and this mean-spirited, homophobic, offensive article proves that the legacy of Joseph McCarthy is alive and well.”

Junod’s profile plays coy about the subject of Spacey’s sexuality, mentioning the actor’s “secret” and mixing him up with a gay character he plays in an upcoming film. “We didn’t do anything underhanded in this story,” said Esquire editor David Granger.

Ashley Judd on her health habits (in Movieline magazine): “I drink a lot of water. I happen to think that ponytails and water are the keys to happiness.”

Michael Douglas turns 53 today.

Where were the paparazzi? Probably still in Paris

John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette celebrated their first wedding anniversary last weekend in Big Sur in California. Funny how they managed to avoid the paparazzi. Certainly if the press had shown, Bessette couldn’t have escaped, since she was wearing stiletto heels. “If I stopped to think how I can walk in these,” she noted, “I probably couldn’t.”

Standoff? Fairly soon, symbiosis will reassert itself

The standoff has begun between actor George Clooney and the paparazzi that he has been so critical of. At the opening of the Hollywood film “The Peacemaker,” some 60 photographers refused to take pictures of the film’s star. A couple even held up signs reading “Go Home, Clooney.” “Pretty frightening, isn’t it?” Clooney sneered.

With any luck, next year we’ll read about mud wrestling

Last year, Danielle House lost her Miss Canadian International title after a barroom brawl. This year, Miss Canadian International Gabriella Petivoky, 20, was dethroned for taking a job at Hooter’s - a restaurant chain that dresses its waitresses in shorts and tight tank tops.

As for those reporters, we say, ‘Book ‘em, Danno’

All reports to the contrary, Jack Lord does not have Alzheimer’s. According to Marie Lord, who has been married to the 66-year-old former star of “Stoney Burke” and “Hawaii Five-O” for 40 years, Lord is “not sick. He’s just getting old.” So why the reports? “The public loves to hear negative things about idols,” she told American Journal. “That gives them a sense of superiority, I guess.”

And, yes, of course we feel so much more superior now

Vicki Lawrence (remember her?) tried to resurrect her day-time talk show, but the effort lasted barely a month. Fox broadcast the last show, save repeats, on Monday. Those repeats will run through Oct. 3.
