Slack Calmly Boots U-Hi

FROM SPORTS REPLAY (Tuesday, September 30, 1997): Replay Chris McCullough of Mead rushed for 143 yards in the Panthers’ 47-42 high school football win over Davis in Yakima Friday night. The credit was given to a teammate.

John Slack had plenty of time to get nervous, but it never showed.

The Ferris senior weathered three agonizing time-to-think time outs and then calmly blasted a 41-yard field goal well through the uprights with 22 seconds left to give Ferris a thrilling 24-22 Greater Spokane League football win over University Friday night at Albi Stadium.

“Definitely, I was nervous, but I was confident I could make it,” Slack said. “The key was concentrating a lot, focusing, not letting anything get to me … and follow through.”

Earlier in the game, Slack’s holder, Jonathon Parker, became the all-time receiver for yardage in league history, passing the 1,352 by Jamie Buenzli of Ferris in 1984-85.

“Ever since I was a sophomore, I’ve been aiming for that record,” said Parker, who is 11 yards past Buenzli.

In the first game of the doubleheader, which drew 3,340 fans, Lewis and Clark used a big first half to defeat North Central 40-20.

Mead beat Davis 47-42 in a non-league game in Yakima.

LC 40, NC 20

As impressive as the first half was for the Tigers (2-1, 2-1), the Indians (0-2, 0-3) made just as good of an impression in the second half.

LC piled up 220 yards of offense and allowed 47 in rolling to a 27-0 lead at the half. The Indians lost three of five fumbles.

“We didn’t turn the ball over, I think that was a big key, and we had a lot of different guys contribute,” LC coach John Hook said.

Darryl Lockridge threw two scoring passes, 19 yards to Adam Love to start the scoring and a back-breaking 26-yarder to Colin Shields 2 seconds before the half.

Sophomore Erik Coleman provided a key play late in the half. Taking the ball on third-and-2 from the LC 23, he swept right, was pinned on the sideline, but busted out for 51 yards. Shields scored on the next play.

“I think we can sit there and dog fight with anyone, but right now it’s a mental thing,” NC coach Wes Hobbs said.

The second half was a different story as NC put together two long drives to pull within 27-14 seconds into the fourth quarter.

However, the Tigers responded with a TD drive and then Derek Johnson ran 27 yards with a fumble to seal the decision. The Indians helped again as the Tigers lined up for a punt at midfield but a lineman jumped before the snap and the 5-yard penalty gave LC a first down to keep the drive going.

Still, NC marched down for another touchdown with 1 minute to play.

Brian Mack scored all three touchdowns for NC on short runs and finished with 107 yards on 29 carries after being held to 24 yards in the first half.

Ferris 24, University 22

The Saxons (1-2, 1-2) scored on their first two possessions and led 15-2 at halftime before the Titans (1-2, 1-2) came back behind quarterback Chris Short.

Short was particularly impressive when the Saxons fumbled the ball on the U-Hi 3 with 9:02 remaining and a 21-16 lead. Short capped the long drive with a 1-yard plunge with 3:02 left.

During the drive, the Titans overcame a holding penalty, but the Saxons were twice called for pass interference and once for unsportsmanlike conduct on a coach after an apparent trap was ruled a catch. The 45 penalty yards helped, but so did four clutch passes, including a 12-yarder to Jake Roberts at the 1 on fourth-and-4.
