Victories Put CV Soccer Team Into Contention

Central Valley’s 3-2 soccer victory over University didn’t count, but it was an eye-opener nonetheless.

Central Valley freshmen Raeanna Jewell and Jamie Danelo scored the goals during the Bears’ upset triumph on Wednesday.

CV has won three of four pre-season matches. None was more significant than its victory over U-Hi.

The Greater Spokane League season begins in earnest on Monday. With the victory, CV put itself in company with the league favorites. Nearly every player is back from last year’s U-Hi runnerup.

On Wednesday, CV fell behind 2-0, then rallied.

Danelo scored 17 minutes into the second half and Jewell got her second goal on an assist from sophomore Angie Foedisch with three minutes remaining to complete the comeback.

Both Valley teams open league against underdog teams. CV is at Rogers and U-Hi at Mt. Spokane.

On Wednesday, the Bears are at Gonzaga Prep, 6-1 in pre-season, and the Titans host Shadle Park.

CV-U-Hi volleyball teams meet

Central Valley is approaching last year’s Greater Spokane League volleyball win total. University has already surpassed last season.

The two teams meet tonight at Central Valley in a match important to both.

Winners of three out of their last four matches, the Bears (3-4) share fifth place in league. A win would assure a share of sixth place at the mid-point of the season.

Rikki Jackson has led the team in kills practically every outing and in digs and blocks most matches.

U-Hi, winless a year ago, already has two victories this season.

The Titans (2-6) have been led in kills by Jen Madsen and in digs by Madsen and Kristina McAuley. Setter Crissa Poole has averaged nearly 30 assists per outing.

They could move into playoff contention with a win.

Club champions decided

Two more ladies club champions were determined during three-week playoff tournaments at local golf Patty Aunan won the match-play title for the Liberty Lake Ladies 18-Hole Club. Dee Elder is the champion at Valley View.

Liberty Lake: Other winners during the 18-Hole club competition were Alice Shattuck in first flight, Mabel Watkins in second flight, Donna Ogilvie in third flight, Carol Schultz in fourth flight and Kitty Duvall in fifth flight.

Consolation winners were Jackie Shea in A flight, Marion Joran in B flight, Deanne Ranniger in C flight and Barb Midkiff in D flight.

Valley View: Elder’s victory for the title of the eight-person championship flight came over Joyce Jacobs.

In first flight, Cleo Workland defeated Loriene Rankin. Second flight was won by Jane Clark over Laura Odette.

Consolation winner was Mary Ann Barham over Deanna Hauser.

During medal play, Jacobs shot 44 gross in A flight and Elder netted 30. Hauser had a 53 in B flight and Rankin netted 31.

C flight went to Clark with 61, while Mary Sjostrom netted 33.

Captain’s Cup champion

During final playoff among monthly Captain’s Cup qualifiers, Lesa Hambleton’s net 73 earned the championship.

She beat Marie Nelson by two strokes for the Cup.

Putting winners during the playoff were Gloria Cash and Jackie Shea in A flight with 33. Nelson had 32 in B.

Vivienne Symbol took 34 putts during her C flight round. Marion Pearson had 33 in D.

Painted Hills medal play

A pair of flight leaders among Painted Hills Ladies Club golfers turned in identical scores.

Sheryl Vandinter in A flight and Arleen Espe in B flight each shot 49 for nine holes.

C flight leader was Cindee Corrick with 57 and Trish Behrens had 65 in D flight.

Net winners were Connie Hatfield with 37 in A, Jacobs with 33 in B, Pam Baynes with 36 in C and Judy Albert with 35 in D.

Five golfers, Jackie Booth, Carol McVicker, Pat Angove, Mabel Lackner and Jan Bernhart all had chip-ins.

Liberty Lake medal play

Liberty Lake Ladies Club 9-hole golfers were out on a nice September day for medal competition.

Elaine Tai shot 51 in A flight, Ruth Jenkins had 54 in B, Sybill Sturgill shot 66 in C and Jean Kelly had 63 in D. Net winners with 35s were Audrey Vanos in A, Shirley Schoenberger and Lorraine Martin in B. Sue Matsui had 41 in C and Elberta Walker 32 in D.
