Eagles Run Volleyball Win Streak To Five

Eastern Washington’s volleyball winning streak reached five Saturday with a 15-10, 15-13, 9-15, 15-13 Big Sky Conference win over visiting Montana State.

Kim Exner had 23 kills and nine blocks for the Eagles (10-2, 4-0), who hit .359 in the first game. Lacey Coover added 21 digs and 15 kills, and Kim Maxwell 54 assists for EWU.

Karen Weyler had 16 kills and 15 digs, and Mindy Nowak 15 kills and 15 digs for the Bobcats (0-2, 9-6).

Denise Lum-Lung’s 28 digs and 13 kills helped Linfield to a 3-15, 15-11, 15-6, 18-16 Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges win at Whitworth (1-9, 0-5).

Sarah Rice and Jennifer Svirsky added 14 kills apiece, and Jen Barker 46 assists for the Wildcats. For the Pirates, Mandy Decious had 29 digs, Katie Jo Borgmann 13 kills and Mary Hubele 24 assists.

Community Colleges of Spokane dropped three of four matches at the Valley of the Sun Tournament at Mesa, Ariz.

The Sasquatch lost to Eastern Arizona CC, Glendale (Ariz.) CC and the host Mesa CC Thunderbirds. CCS defeated Western Arizona CC 15-11, 15-10.

For the day, JoEne Heimbigner had 68 assists, Cydny Edmonds 33 kills, Krista McAuley 32 kills and Sabrina Page 37 digs for CCS.

Cross country

Oregon’s men and Washington’s women won team titles at the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle.

Oregon scored 43 points, led by runner-up Laird Prosser, who ran the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes, 58.18 seconds. Mead High grads ran well for Oregon, with Rob Aubrey fifth in 25:02.56, Micah Davis 13th in 25:25.52 and Greg James 14th in 25:31.96.

Fifth-place Margaret Butler ran 17:26.04 for 5,000 to guide Washington to 33 points.

Idaho State’s Elvis Terry (24:45.04) and Simon Fraser’s Cari Rampersad (17:14.21) claimed individual titles.

EWU’s men placed seventh, topped by 55th-place Chris Henderson (27:13.13). EWU’s women placed 10th, with Darcy Steele’s 31st-place 18:34.35 leading the way.

Men’s soccer

Freshman reserve Patrick O’Neill scored twice to lift Pacific Lutheran (5-2-1, 3-2-1) to a 3-1 NCIC win over visiting Whitworth (3-6-0, 1-4-0).

Trailing 2-0, the Pirates scored at 74 minutes when Jace Jones headed Ben Wickert’s corner kick. Whitworth nearly scored 5 minutes later, but goalkeeper Jonas Tanzer used his hand to knock out Wickert’s attempt.

Yavapai Community College, last year’s national runner-up, defeated CCS 4-1 before a crowd of 1,000 at Prescott, Ariz.

Women’s soccer

Amy Chippendale scored on an 11-yard shot from the middle and Washington State (3-4-0) defeated Air Force 3-1 at Missoula.

Chippendale also helped the Cougars to a 1-0 lead when she fed forward Tina Walsh at 32 minutes.

WSU freshman Karli Silveira beat goalie Erin Munson with a one-on-one move at 79 minutes for her first collegiate goal. USAF scored in the final minute on Meghann McNiff’s header off a corner kick.

Coral Slater and Libby Christensen scored twice apiece as Oregon State (2-4-1) defeated EWU 6-0 in the first round of the Umbro Invitational at Corvallis, Ore.

Amy Schmitt had 23 saves for the Eagles (0-2-0), who meet Portland State (1-7-1) today.

Carrie Boers scored twice in the final 3 minutes to lead Pacific Lutheran (4-3-1, 3-2-1) to a 4-2 NCIC win over visiting Whitworth (1-4-1, 1-2-0) at Tacoma.

Boers has four goals and four assists in her last three matches.

PLU led 2-0 at 63 minutes when Whiworth’s Jamie Day bounced a shot off the crossbar and Heidi Hultgrenn secured the rebound for a goal. The Pirates tied the match 10 minutes later on Amber Young’s 18-yard direct free kick.

Touch passes from Nicole Snyder and Danae Anderson set up Heidi Simmons’ goal from 20 yards out as CCS (2-0-1 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges) scored in the final 2 minutes to edge Tacoma 1-0 at Spokane Falls CC.
