Ex-Coug Coach Will Headline Zag Clinic

George Raveling, former basketball coach at Washington State, Iowa and USC, will headline “A Day with the Bulldogs” basketball coaches clinic Nov. 8 at Martin Centre on the Gonzaga University campus.

Raveling will be joined by first-year GU head coach Dan Monson, Sehome High coach Pat Fitterer and Whitman College head coach Skip Molitor, a former GU player.

Cost is $45 in advance, $55 at the door, $120 for a staff of three in advance and $135 at the door.

Raveling began his head coaching career at WSU, taking the Cougars to the 1981 and 1983 NCAA tournaments. The ‘83 squad advanced to the second round before falling to Ralph Sampson-led Virginia. He was named the then-Pacific-8 Conference Coach of the Year in 1976. Since retiring from USC, Raveling has done basketball television commentary.

Fitterer coached one of the most dominating teams in the history of Washington prep basketball. His 1996 Sehome squad was 30-0 en route to his second State AAA championship. The ‘96 squad included current Bulldog Mark Spink.

Molitor, who played for the Bulldogs from 1970-74, is beginning his fourth year at Whitman. He has held NCAA Division I assistant jobs at Gonzaga, WSU, Santa Clara, Montana and Colorado State.

Baseball

Former Spokane Indians play-by-play announcer Paul Olden, 36, has been named a radio play-by-play announcer for the new Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Olden called Spokane’s Pacific Coast League games from 1980-82. He’s also announced for the New York Yankees and Jets, the Cleveland Indians and has been the public-address announcer at recent Super Bowls.

Bowling

Top-seeded Ricky Brown polished off No. 3 qualifier Keith Christensen 243-191 to win the first Junior Bowlers Tour tournament of the season Sept. 14 at Bowlers World.

Eric Morasch finished third; Chad Demmitt of Omak, who rolled a 917 series in the qualifying round, fourth; and Brian Nichols fifth in the event that drew a large field of 65.

Shane Ratel had high game for the boys, a 278, while Jamie Prior’s 228 led the girls.

Next JBT is Oct. 19 at Valley Bowl.

College scene

Eastern Washington’s Brenda Hall, a junior from Spokane (East Valley), was selected the Big Sky Conference women’s golf athlete of the week after she shot a 1-over-par 73 to win the Grizzly Fall Classic at the Missoula Country Club last week.

Hall, tied for fourth entering the third and final round, won by two strokes with a 10-over-par 226. EWU placed second among six teams.

Jackie Bates of Spokane (Gonzaga Prep), a senior at Colby College, added another honor to her sterling volleyball resume at the Waterville, Maine, school when she was named to the all-tournament team at the Bates College Round-Robin Tournament last weekend.

Bates had 48 kills and 46 digs in four matches.

Leah Wiiest, a Deer Park High graduate and sophomore at Cornell University, earned all-tournament honors at the Nevada/Mikasa volleyball invitational last weekend.

Although the Big Red dropped three of four matches, Wiiest was solid, compiling 14 kills against Nevada and 12 against San Diego.

Angel Whalen of Spokane (University High School), a sophomore setter, is the cover girl on the Galveston College volleyball schedule cards.

Whalen was a Texas Junior College Athletic Conference honorable mention pick last year.

Jason Iverson of Spokane (Northwest Christian), a junior at Western Baptist College, had a key goal in a 3-1 win over The Evergreen State College that helped the Warriors protect the No. 19 national ranking they earned in the NAIA Men’s Soccer top-25 poll.

Phil Daubel, a 1997 graduate of Riverside High School, has made the men’s soccer team at Mitchell College in New London, Conn.

Golf

Clint Wallman of Birdies Golf Center and the Clint Wallman Golf School in Spokane, has advanced to the final round of the Compaq World Putting Championship in Orlando, Fla., by winning a regional qualifier.

Clark Brunkow-Mather, also representing Birdies, was runner-up and will be the first alternate.

Wallman, who completed the 18-hole putting competition with an even-par 36, will join other regional qualifiers, along with entrants from the PGA, LPGA, Senior PGA, NIKE and European Tours in late November at Disney World.

The winner will earn the title of World’s Best Putter and $225,000.

Softball

The Sun Devils 18-and-under girls fastpitch team will hold tryouts today at 11 a.m. at University High School.

Triathlon

Four Spokane area residents will compete in the Ironman World Triathlon Championship Oct. 18 in Hawaii, officials announced.

The group includes Kelly Vigeland, 35, of Spokane and Eugene Allwine, 42, of Pullman, who will be competing in their first Ironman; Martin Scates, 35, of Chewelah, in his third; and Sister Madonna Buder, 67, of Spokane, who will be in her eighth straight and 11th overall. Buder holds Ironman age-group records for both women 60-64 and 65-69.

Miscellany

Washington State University has added one head coach and eight assistants to its athletic staff.

Rocco Aceto, an assistant the last two years at Auburn, is WSU’s new women’s swimming coach. Aceto, 33, who also has extensive high-level club coaching experience, named Diane Goering, who has most recently been a swim coach in Houston, to his staff.

Russ Swan, who played 11 years of pro ball after a stellar career at Spokane Falls Community College, is the new pitching coach for the baseball team.

The women’s basketball team has new assistants in Barbara Ehardt, a 1988 graduate of Idaho State who has been on the BYU staff since 1995, and Lorinda Flikkema, a ‘95 graduate of Seattle Pacific and an assistant at her alma mater for two years.

Rohan Walker, an assistant at Idaho, his alma mater, the past two years, joins the WSU track program to work with sprinters.

Colin Tindall joins the crew staff after two years at his alma mater, University of North Carolina.

Brian Thorpe, who played sweeper and mid-fielder at Bowdin College, will be the goalkeeper coach in the soccer program.

And Melissa Arthur, who has played on the Futures Tour and was an assistant pro in Bloomington, Ind., replaces Jill Johnson in the WSU golf program. Johnson left to become head coach at Wyoming.

Eastern Washington University coaches luncheons, featuring head coach Mike Kramer and Eagles football video highlights, will move to the Bayou Brewery in Spokane.

The luncheons are held at noon on Mondays throughout the football season. The public is invited.
