The Artist’s Unmatched Energy Captivates Crowd

Maisy Fernandez Correspondent

It was musical genius. That’s the only way I can describe The Artist’s “Jam of the Year.” And that still probably doesn’t do it justice.

I have been a consumer of his music since I was 10, so maybe I am biased - but it was by far the best show I have ever seen.

When I heard The Artist was coming to The Gorge, I got goosebumps at the thought of seeing him live. I envisioned myself dancing wildly, smiling from ear to ear. So when Sept. 27 rolled around, I was ready.

He catapulted us through stages of his career with songs from the days when he was Prince to his present work. No matter what song it was though, his energy was insurmountable.

I was even more awestruck than expected. He played his hits, but I felt more fulfilled at hearing songs I thought I wouldn’t, such as “The Beautiful Ones,” and “Girls and Boys,” and “Let’s Work.” (I did feel a tinge of disappointment when he didn’t do “Erotic City,” though.)

His last set included “Baby I’m a Star,” the last song he performed in the movie Purple Rain. And The Gorge crowd responded with the same enthusiasm as the audience in the movie - except this time, I got to be there.

I was moved to be a part of that energy. I danced crazily. I jammed. I sang. And so did 12,000 others - all with smiles on our faces.
