Woman Who Ate Mushrooms Doing Better

From Staff And Wire Reports

A Vancouver, Wash., woman who ate poisonous mushrooms with her husband is doing better.

Vera Mishchuk, 32, was upgraded from critical to serious condition Monday at Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital in Portland.

Her husband, Alex, 28, was released yesterday.

The couple ate Amanita phalloides, the so-called “death cap” mushrooms, on Friday after picking them in their back yard.

Aminitin, a chemical in the mushroom, attacks the liver and can be deadly if not treated in time. Doctors say Vera Mishchuk’s liver is working better, and say she was even able to eat some cheesecake Monday.
