Reese One-Hits Priest River

Kurt Reese pitched a one-hitter Tues day and walk-happy Lakeland powered by Priest River 20-1 in an Intermountain League baseball game at Priest River.

Reese, 2-0 for the season and 23-0 for his career, allowed Zack Wood’s home run in the second inning but otherwise overpowered the Spartans in a five-inning game shortened by the mercy rule.

Reese struck out nine and walked one.

Spartans starter Lucas Blaine walked six in the first inning. His reliever, Clark Kawamoto, walked four in the second.

Jeremy Nielsen finished 3 for 4, with four RBIs, as visiting Moscow edged Cheney 7-6 in a non-leaguer.

Moscow reliever Josh Yarno struck out eight in four innings. Matt Conrath hit a three-run homer in the first and Pat Stiffler also homered for Cheney.

Softball

Colleen Nave pitched four innings of no-hit ball and settled for a five-inning two-hitter as Lakeland defeated visiting Priest River 14-2 to complete an IML doubleheader sweep at Rathdrum.

Loni Baumann struck out five and Bobbi Jo Tweedy hit a two-run homer as the Hawks won the opener 11-1.

Tricia Stookey (3-0) struck out five in three innings and combined with Katie Hirst for a five-inning, one-hitter as visiting East Valley (5-0) defeated Post Falls 13-0 in a non-leaguer.

Ashley LeGrant went 3 for 4 and Stookey had two RBIs for the Knights. Jayme Smith had the Trojans’ hit.

Kira Bliss (1-2) had nine strikeouts, including two in the seventh, as visiting Cheney (1-3) held off Sandpoint 6-4 in a non-leaguer.

Cheney’s Candice Birschell went 3 for 4. The Bulldogs’ Bobbi Jo Jensen went 3 for 3, with two doubles and two RBIs.

Boys soccer

Trevor Mordhorst’s shot from 20 yards barely evaded the outstretched hands of Allan Brinkmeier as visiting Moscow edged Sandpoint 1-0 in the North Idaho League.

Mordhorst scored at 82 minutes. Moscow goalkeeper Dusty Cash had 12 of his 14 saves in the second half, when the Bulldogs attempted 16 shots.

Washington/GSL baseball

Reliever Joe Paventy (1-0) pitched three scoreless innings as CV (4-1, 3-0) defeated visiting LC 10-5 to take over first place alone in the league.

Also in the GSL, it was: Mt. Spokane 7, G-Prep 3; Ferris 24, Shadle 0; Mead 6, U-Hi 5; and Rogers 7, NC 4.
