Washington State’s Angie Cates shared second place Tuesday as the three-day University of Idaho Spring Invitational women’s golf tournament came to an end at Moscow.

Cates, a Woodinville, Wash., senior who won the Seattle and Washington Women’s Golf Association championships during the summer, put together rounds of 79-75-77 for a 231, her career-best finish. Sacramento State’s Megan Hamilton took the individual title with a total of 230. She was one stroke better than Cates and Jordan Lintz of University of Wyoming.

Wyoming won the team championship with a 54-hole total of 948. Idaho finished second at 959, followed by Sacramento State (967). Eastern Washington placed sixth. WSU did not have a complete team.

University of Washington trailed champion UCLA by 16 strokes and wound up second as the Anteater Invitational men’s tournament, hosted by UC Irvine, concluded at Coto de Caza, Calif.

UCLA posted a 54-hole total of 864. UW, led by individual runner-up Rob Rashell, scored 880. Rashell lost the title in a playoff with UCLA’s Jason Semelsberger after both finished 3-under at 213.

Eastern Washington placed 14th among the 20 teams. Idaho finished 18th. EWU’s Kevin Kelly shared 20th place in individual scoring with a 222. Brian King led Idaho with a 227.

Baseball

Washington State crossed above the .500 mark for the first time in three years Tuesday by defeating Gonzaga 13-6 in a non-league game on Bailey Field.

The Cougars (12-11) pounded out 13 hits, three of them home runs, and beat the Bulldogs (3-23) for the fifth time in six tries this season.

Washington State starter Dave Wheeler (1-2) looked sharp in his five innings of work to earn his first victory.

Ole Vigeland, who entered in the sixth, went one inning and has not allowed a hit this season in seven innings of work.

Steve Curran led the way for WSU with two hits, including his fifth home run, and four runs batted in.

WSU’s Casey Kelley put a fastball deep over the left-field fence for his Pac-10 North-leading ninth home run of the year. Starting catcher Jeff Scherer also homered.

Gavin Hare and Adam Munson-Young combined for seven hits as Community Colleges of Spokane pounded North Idaho College 14-3 at Coeur d’Alene.

Winning pitcher George Petticrew struck out 13. The former Lakeside High right-hander, drafted last June by the Kansas City Royals, pitched shutout ball after falling behind 3-0 in the first inning.

Softball

Wenatchee Community College scored three times in the seventh to win the first game 6-5 then took the nightcap 5-3 to sweep Community Colleges of Spokane in an NWAACC doubleheader at Spokane.

Five hits and two walks fueled the winning rally in the opener, offsetting four hits by Spokane’s Sara Schumacher. In the second game, Wenatchee broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the sixth inning.
