Chiefs’ Trio Blast Past Americans

Ty Jones supplied the heavy artillery with accurate fire from Greg Leeb and Lynn Loyns before a full house on military appreciation night.

They carted off the game’s three-star awards in the Spokane Chiefs’ 6-3 Western Hockey League win over the Tri-City Americans Saturday night in the Arena.

Jones had two goals and two assists in his most effective performance since the World Junior Tournament last month.

Leeb moved into sixth place on the club’s career goal-scoring list with his 116th and 117th.

And Loyns, entering the game with four points this season, had two assists to go with his second goal as the Chiefs sent the Ams reeling to their sixth straight loss.

Jones opened the scoring with his 22nd of the year with the Chiefs on the power play.

Ken McKay countered for Tri-City with his 20th of the year, but Leeb broke the 1-1 tie with his 35th goal and 71st point. Jones, cycling low and creating the space that gave Leeb an open shot, set up the scoring play.

Leeb chipped the puck over Aaron Baker.

The Chiefs led 3-1 after two periods, Jones scoring three minutes into the second and Spokane hiking the lead to 4-1 on Derek Schutz’ 17th of the season. That turned out to be the game-winner.
