Churchill Helps Harriman Trail

Associated Press

Winston S. Churchill has donated $84,000 to sponsor the Baker Creek Bridge along Blaine County’s Harriman Trail in memory of the late Ambassador Pamela Harriman.

Churchill is the grandson of World War II British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the son of Harriman and Randolph Churchill. He made the donation, which was announced Friday, on behalf of his entire family.

“I think it is a brilliant idea that there should be a memorial to my mother in Sun Valley,” Churchill said in a statement issued by the Blaine County Recreation District. “She loved vacations there. It was almost the only place she could find time for relaxation and tranquillity.”

Harriman, the U.S. ambassador to France who died last February, was instrumental in development of the Harriman Trail, which will be dedicated in memory of her third husband, W. Averell Harriman. He was governor of New York, an ambassador and founder of the Sun Valley Resort.

Work on the trail began last summer and is expected to take three years to complete.
