Led by last year’s winning team, four cars were bunched within three laps of the top Saturday night as the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona neared its halfway point in Daytona Beach, Fla.

A Dyson Riley & Scott MK III Ford, virtually identical to the car that won in 1997, held a one-lap lead over the pole-winning Team Scandia Ferrari 11 hours into the race.

Great Expedition is one of 384 3-year-olds on a list of early nominations for the Triple Crown races. The best-known nominee is Favorite Trick, the 1997 2-year-old champion, who is unbeaten in eight starts.

Fresno State basketball players Avondre Jones and Tremaine Fowlkes were suspended for violating unspecified team rules. The suspensions mark the eighth and ninth time that a player has been suspended from the team this season.

William Joppy reclaimed the WBA middleweight championship with an unanimous decision in a rematch with Julio Cesar Green in Tampa, Fla.

Joppy (25-1-1) started fast, staggering Green (22-3) in the first round with a straight left. Joppy put together a series of uppercuts during the fifth.
