Obituaries

Ruth (Vance) Turrell Deer Park

Funeral service for Ruth Elizabeth (Vance) Turrell, 101, will be at 1 p.m. today at Christ’s Church in Deer Park. Interment will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Turrell, a resident of Deer Park since 1929, died Friday.

She was born in Industry, Ill., and in 1915 married Harry Turrell in Moorehead, Minn.

They worked on a farm near Kelso, N.D., and in 1916 moved to Cummings, N.D., and farmed. In 1917 they moved to Northwood, N.D., and then to Valley City, N.D.

In 1918 they moved to Montana and worked on a wheat ranch and did teamster work in Billings. They bought a farm near Columbus, Mont., where they lived until 1924 when they moved to Longview, Wash.

They moved to the Yakima Valley in 1926 and then to Deer Park in 1929. They sold their Deer Park farm in 1947 and moved to the Spokane Valley for a short time before moving to Umatilla, Ore., and then to Richland.

In 1949 they came back to Spokane to work on a small horse ranch. From 1952 to 1953 they managed a hotel in Soap Lake, Wash., and then retired and moved back to Deer Park.

Mrs. Turrell was a charter member of Christ’s Church in Deer Park, and a member of the Williams Valley Grange and the American Association of Retired Persons.

Her husband died in 1972.

Survivors include two sons, Len Turrell of Puyallup, Wash., and Herbert Turrell of Post Falls; 14 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 35 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild.

James Barber Spokane

Funeral Mass for James R. Barber, 85, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Barber, who was born in Murfreesboro, Tenn., died Friday.

He moved to Manteca, Calif., when he was three years old.

He graduated from Manteca High School and the University of San Francisco, where he played football.

He played professional football for the Washington Redskins for seven years under coach Ray Flaherty.

Mr. Barber coached with Flaherty for the New York Yankees and the Chicago Hornets football teams.

During World War II he served in the Navy aboard the Fleet City and Farragut.

He moved to Spokane and was the general manager for Bill Hatch Sporting Goods Co., and then went into the brokerage business and owned the L.E. Nicholls Co., before retiring in 1977.

Mr. Barber was a member of the Hayden Lake (Idaho) Country Club, Manito Country Club and St. Augustine Parish.

Survivors include his wife, Lee; a daughter, Becky Hoal; and a granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Augustine Church or to the Morning Star Boys Ranch.

Paul Halverson Davenport, Wash.

Prayer vigil for Paul R. Halverson, 71, will be at 7 p.m. today at the Immaculate Conception Church in Davenport. Mass of the Resurrection will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Concluding services will be follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Davenport. Strate Funeral Home in Davenport is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Halverson, who was born in Wilbur, Wash., died Thursday.

He graduated in 1944 from West Valley High School and served in the Navy during World War II.

In 1950 he married Helen Rosman in Hartline, Wash., and in 1960 they purchased a farm north of Davenport.

Mr. Halverson continued to farm until his death.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Davenport, and the Wilbur Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; two daughters, Judy Sinclair and Michelle Halverson both of Spokane; two sons, Rick and Joe Halverson both of Davenport; a brother, Dale Halverson of Spokane; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Grace Calhoun Malden, Wash.

Funeral Mass for Grace Evelyn Felton Calhoun, 67, will be at 10 a.m. today at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Rosalia, Wash. Interment will follow at the Pine City Cemetery in Pine City, Wash. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Rosalia is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Calhoun, who was born in Bovill, Idaho, died Friday.

She graduated in 1947 from Bovill High School, and in 1948 married Jack Felton in Malden, Wash.

Mrs. Calhoun worked for the Postal Service in Malden and Rosalia until her retirement.

Mr. Felton died in 1974.

In 1977 she married Wayne Calhoun and they resided in Malden.

Mrs. Calhoun was a 50-year resident of Malden, and was a member of the Hill Bridge Club and Milwaukee Women’s Club.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Dan Felton of St. Maries and Randall Felton of West Linn, Ore.; a daughter, Phyllis Eveland of Colville, Wash.; two stepdaughters, Kathy Eide of Spokane and Megan Kleiber of Gold Bar, Wash.; a brother, Russell Barnes; a sister, Shelley Seewald of Boise; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Berneice Dormaier Spokane

Funeral service for Berneice G. Dormaier, 80, will be at noon Wednesday at Riplinger Funeral Home. A private interment will be held at the LaCrosse Cemetery in LaCrosse, Wash.

Born in Pennewawi, Wash., Mrs. Dormaier died Friday.

She moved to Spokane in the early 1940s, then to Endicott, Wash., in the mid 1950s. She returned to Spokane in 1963.

Mrs. Dormaier began her own catering service while in Endicott and continued that business in Spokane.

She then worked as a floral arranger for Glenn’s Flowers until joining Washington Water Power as a manager of the cafeteria in 1966.

Mrs. Dormaier retired in 1978 and moved to San Jose, Calif., in 1980, then returned to Spokane in 1988.

Survivors include three brothers, Victor Reiber of Palouse, Wash., LeRoy Reiber of Twisp, Wash., and Lester Reiber of Viola, Idaho; a sister, Erma Tobeck of Petaluma, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Dee Stradley of Lewiston; a stepgranddaughter and two stepgreat-granddaughters.

Nellie Warnick Spokane

Visitation for Nellie G. Warnick, 95, will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Warnick, who was born in Centralia, Wash., died Thursday.

She graduated from Nebraska State University in 1932 with a degree in teaching.

Mrs. Warnick taught school for several years and was a member of the Kappa Delta Phi sorority.

She was employed by Boise Cascade as a payroll clerk for 16 years before retiring in 1966.

Mrs. Warnick was a resident of Spokane for 41 years.

Her husband, Frank Warnick, died in 1972.

Survivors include a niece, Dorothy Olmstead of Kennewick; and two great-nieces, Debbie Hatley and Michele Davenport, both of Kennewick.

Ruth (Hobbs) Hutchins Spokane

No service will be held for Ruth E. (Hobbs) Hutchins, 78, at her request. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hutchins, who was born in Spokane, died Friday.

She was a homemaker and was a member of the Eagles Lodge Auxiliary.

Her husband, Harvey, died in 1980.

Mrs. Hutchins is survived by two sons, Dan Hutchins of Spokane and Gary Hutchins of Arizona; a daughter, Kelly Byrd of Blanchard, Idaho; a sister, Jo Bond of Las Vegas; a brother, Fred Hobbs of Spokane; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Charley Stark Springdale, Wash.

Graveside service for Charley Earl Stark, 73, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Springdale Cemetery.

Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Stark, who was born in Olney Springs, Colo., died Wednesday.

He farmed most of his life and worked for Wilcox farms near Cheney for several years.

Mr. Stark retired about 20 years ago and moved to the Springdale area.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy; three sons, Bill and David Stark, both of Spokane, and Wayne Stark of Springdale; four daughters, Lilybeth Brand of Spokane, Leanne Lewis of Springdale, Carleen Stark of Airway Heights and Deborah Stark of Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D.; a brother, Olin Stark of Caldwell, Idaho; and six grandchildren.

Kathryn Ulowetz Spokane

Funeral service for Kathryn Joan Ulowetz, 69, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Trentwood. Interment will follow at the St. Joseph Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ulowetz, who was a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Friday.

She worked as a bookkeeper for Kaiser Aluminum.

Her husband, George Ulowetz, died in 1965.

Survivors include three sons, Joseph Ulowetz of Northbrook, Ill., Ronald Ulowetz of California and Fredrick Ulowetz of Marysville, Wash.; a daughter, Kirsten Ulowetz of Sacramento, Calif.; two brothers, John Kingsbury of Carson, Wash., and H. Thomas Kingsbury of Spokane; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Inland Northwest Chapter.

Louis Presta Spokane

Funeral service for Louis E. Presta, 99, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Interment will follow at the Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Presta, who was born in Priest River, Idaho, died Friday.

He served in the Army during World War II with the calvary and graduated from Gonzaga Law School.

Mr. Presta worked as a claims investigator for the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries.

He was a 90-year resident of Spokane and a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes parish and Windsor Grange.

His first wife, Osa, and his second wife, Carol, both preceded him in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Roop of Spokane; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Ann’s Home for Children.

Leila Ogle Spokane

Memorial service for Leila A. Ogle. 72, will be at 2 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ogle, who was a 40-year resident of Spokane, died Friday.

She was born in Gibbon, Neb., and worked as a homemaker.

Her husband, Wilbur Ogle, died in 1995.

Survivors include two daughters, Annelle Lloyd of Spokane and Readean Timmons of Graham, Wash.; two sons, Randall and Scott Ogle, both of Spokane; and four grandchildren.

James Snead Moses Lake

Visitation for James Sanford Snead, 86, will be from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and from 8 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Kayser’s Chapel of Memories in Moses Lake. Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Lind Cemetery in Lind, Wash.

Mr. Snead, who was born in Lind, died Friday.

He graduated in 1930 from Lind High School and then in 1935 from the University of Washington.

Mr. Snead was a farmer in Lind until his retirement in 1982. He moved to Moses Lake in 1992.

He was a member of the Pheta Chi.

Survivors include his wife, Norma; and a brother, H.E. Snead of Moses Lake.

Neva Peters Spokane

Funeral service for Neva I. Peters, 93, a 54-year resident of Spokane, will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Graveside service and interment will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Denver.

Mrs. Peters, who was born in Missouri, died Friday.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Peters was a member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Daughters of the Nile and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband of 76 years, John; a son, Lewis Peters at home; two daughters, Shirley Lease of Otis Orchards and Beverly Miller of Spokane; a sister, Mildred Gardner of Mission, Kan.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Christine Goddard Spokane

Visitation for Christine J. Goddard, 41, will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Liberty Lake Chapel.

Mrs. Goddard, who was born in Ellensburg, died Saturday.

She worked as a telemarketer and was a Spokane resident for 37 years.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Schelin and Lawrence Dugger, both of Post Falls; a brother, Edward Dugger of Spokane; three sisters, Betty Lines and Diana Hedquist, both of Ritzville, Wash., and Bobbie Pollock of Greenacres; and three grandchildren.

Donald Corey Spokane

No service will be held for Donald S. Corey, 68, at his request. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Corey, who was born in Baker, Mont., died Thursday.

He resided in the Rathdrum, Idaho, and Coeur d’Alene area before moving to the Spokane Valley in 1975.

Mr. Corey had served in the Army during the Korean War.

He was a member of the Steel Workers Local 338, and had retired from Kaiser Aluminum-Trentwood in 1982.

Survivors include his companion, Shirley; a son, Brian Corey of Denver; three daughters, Robbie Jackson of Veradale, Kathy Beltran of San Diego and Kelly Tuntland of Coeur d’Alene; two brothers, Grant Corey of Coeur d’Alene and Chuck Corey of Spokane; a sister, Kay Holman of Lancaster, Pa.; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation.

Louie Loewen Burke, Idaho

A celebration of life for Louie E. Loewen, 69, will be held Saturday at the Wallace Senior Center. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Loewen, who was born in Minnesota, died Saturday.

He moved to the Silver Valley in 1940 from Minnesota and operated Louie’s Mini Services and also worked for Hecla Mining. He retired from the Star Mine after 16 years.

Mr. Loewen was a member of the Shoshone Golf and Tennis Club.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; a daughter, Brenda Day of Missoula; three brothers, John Loewen of Nevada, Cornelius Loewen of St. Regis, Mont., and Clifford Loewen of Moses Lake; a sister, Irene Peters of Silverton, Idaho; two grandchildren, Eric and Toby, and three great-grandchildren.

Xaylor Thor Spokane

Prayer service for Xaylor Thor, 65, will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Graveside service with military honors will be Monday at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Thor, who was a prominent member of the Hmong Community, died Saturday.

He was born in Laos and served under the Central Intelligence Agency command during the Vietnam War as an Army lieutenant in the Royal Armed Forces.

Mr. Thor was awarded the congressional Commendation and Citation for his role in rescuing downed air crews and the destruction of enemy convoys.

He recently retired from Rosauers, where he worked as a custodian.

Mr. Thor was a member of the LAO Veterans of America and was a 22-year resident of Spokane.

Survivors include his wife, Youa Lor; two sons, Newchin and Nhia Thor, both of Spokane; two daughters, Maylee Thor and Maiyer Thor, both of Spokane; a brother, Chongeha Thor of Laos; three sisters, Chue Thor of Vietnam, and My and Mao Thor, both of California; and one grandson.

Pearl Lundy Spokane

Memorial service Pearl Inez Lundy, 84, is pending. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lundy, a 48-year resident of Spokane, died Friday.

She was born in North Dakota and had worked as a nurse.

Mrs. Lundy was a member of the Euclid Baptist Church.

Her husband, David, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Paul Lundy of Mead; a daughter, Inez Lollis of California; a brother, Swede Lien of Fargo, N.D.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Vera McKay Almira, Wash.

Funeral service for Vera H. McKay, 96, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Almira Community Church in Almira. Burial will follow at the LaFollette Cemetery north of Almira. Strate Funeral Home in Wilbur, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McKay, who was born near Sherman, Wash., died Saturday.

She graduated from Opportunity High School and received her teaching certificate from Cheney Normal School.

Mrs. McKay worked as a teacher in Montana and then moved to an area north of Wilbur and taught at the Broadax Country School.

She retired from teaching at Hartline, Wash.

Mrs. McKay was a member of the Almira Community Church and the Grand Coulee Grange.

Her husband, Alex McKay, died in 1980.

Survivors include three sons, Larry McKay of Rosalia, Wash., and Paul and Gary McKay, both of Almira; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wilbur Senior Center.

Effie Leonetti Spokane

Funeral Mass for Effie M. Leonetti, 84, was Monday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Entombment followed at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Leonetti, who was born on a farm near Rathdrum, Idaho, died Thursday.

She was a laundry worker.

Mrs. Leonetti was a 64-year resident of Spokane and a member of St. Aloysius Parish, St. Aloysius Guild, St. Jude, the Independent Order of Foresters and the American Italian Club.

Her husband, Louis Leonetti, died in 1977.

Mrs. Leonetti is survived by a sister, Virginia Mantense of Spokane.
