Zags’ Hendrix Again Earns Monthly Honor

Gonzaga University senior for ward Bakari Hendrix has been named the West Coast Conference men’s basketball player of the month for January.

Hendrix, the WCC co-player of the month for December, helped the Bulldogs to a 7-3 record in January as they improved their overall record to 17-6 and their WCC mark to 6-2 for a share of the conference lead.

The Vallejo, Calif., native scored 180 points, grabbed 61 rebounds, had 15 assists and shot 53.4 percent from the floor while averaging 29 minutes a game. His 17.9 average ranks second in the WCC.

Vandals’ Curry honored

Idaho guard Avery Curry was honored Monday by the Big West Conference as one of its men’s basketball co-players of the week.

Curry scored 63 points as the Vandals lost to Pacific and beat Boise State.

Curry’s 24.6 points in conference games is the best in the Big West. His 19.9 average overall is tied for second. He shared the honor with New Mexico State’s Charles Gosa.

Cardinal chooses Eagles

All-state defensive lineman Brandon Moore of Medical Lake has orally committed to play football at Eastern Washington University.

Moore, a 6-foot-1, 235-pound senior, will sign a national letter of intent Wednesday, said Medical Lake coach John Giannandrea.

Moore, a fullback on offense, rushed for 1,074 yards and 18 touchdowns. The Cardinals were part of a three-way tie for the 2A Great Northern League title and reached the state semifinals.

The Bantams hit 8 of 11 free throws in the extra period to break open the nonleague game at Colfax and overcome the game-high 23 points of Colfax’s Brent Damery.

The Vikings (8-13) used defense to overcome the Bulldogs (4-17) and advance to the double-elimination portion of the Idaho A-1 Region I playoffs.

The Vikings visit No. 1-ranked and undefeated Lake City (20-0) on Wednesday while No. 3 seed Lewiston (9-11) visits No. 2 Post Falls (14-6).
