Ex-Chiefs Figure In Pair Of Trades

From Wire Reports

Defenseman Bryan McCabe, who played three seasons for the Spokane Chiefs, was traded Friday by the New York Islanders to the Vancouver Canucks in a deal for veteran center Trevor Linden.

Also sent to Vancouver was center Todd Bertuzzi and a 1998 third-round draft pick.

Hours later, the Islanders, working to beat a midnight deadline on a trading freeze throughout the Olympics, picked up three more players by sending three of their own to Anaheim.

In that trade, New York dealt another ex-Chief, center Travis Green, defenseman Doug Houda and right wing Tony Tuzzolino to the Mighty Ducks in exchange for defenseman J.J. Daigneault, center Mark Janssens and right wing Joe Sacco.

Linden, a six-time 30-goal scorer, who has spent his 10-year National Hockey League career in Vancouver, has been criticized publicly by Canucks coach Mike Keenan this season. He was Vancouver’s captain from 1991 until Mark Messier joined the team in July.

The 22-year old McCabe, named the Islanders’ captain before this season, has three goals, nine assists and 145 penalty minutes.

He came to Spokane from Medicine Hat in the 1992-93 season, played the entire campaign the next year and was traded to Brandon in the latter part of 1994-95.

Green spent four seasons with the Chiefs, scoring 137 goals, 51 in 1988-89. He had 102 points that season.

Kariya doubtful

Canadian hockey star Paul Kariya may miss the Olympics after sustaining a concussion last weekend.

Kariya did not practice with the Mighty Ducks on Friday and was doubtful for their home game against the Los Angeles Kings tonight, team spokesman Rob Scichili said. He was supposed to travel to Nagano on Sunday, health permitting. Team Canada’s first game is Feb. 13.

Marchment suspended

Tampa Bay defenseman Bryan Marchment was suspended for the second time this season, this time for kneeing Carolina’s Kevin Dineen earlier this week.

Marchment’s suspension was effective pending a hearing to be held during the Olympic break.

On the ice

Donald Audette scored two power-play goals as the Buffalo Sabres remained unbeaten in eight games with a 2-2 tie against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Buffalo.

Peter Zezel had a goal and an assist in his debut with Vancouver as the Canucks defeated the visiting Edmonton Oilers 5-4.
