Shelter Offers To Take Dog

A Utah shelter for abused and abandoned animals says it is willing to provide a permanent home for Nadas, the collie-malamute mix condemned to die for chasing livestock.

But Jackson County says no.

“We have taken dogs that were under court order to be destroyed in the past,” said Estelle Munro, office manager of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, a 200-acre compound near Kanab, Utah.

The nonprofit shelter has room for 1,500 animals and is home to 600 dogs, about a fourth of which are deemed unadoptable and kept in fenced yards.

Attorney Robert Babcock of Lake Oswego informed Jackson County officials of the sanctuary’s offer by letter on Dec. 2.

But Jackson County Administrator Burke Raymond said Friday that officials haven’t talked to the Utah shelter and won’t.

“No. I’m not going to get involved in this,” he said.
