Vandals Break School Records At Indoor Meet

University of Idaho track and field athletes broke two school records and earned provisional NCAA Indoor qualifying marks in four events Saturday at the annual Vandal Scoring Meet in the Kibbie Dome.

The men’s 4x400 relay team of Tawanda Chiwira, Curtis Kunkel, Adekunle Adejuyigbe and Felix Kamangirira broke the Idaho indoor record with their winning time of 3:07.51, which is the second-fastest 4x400 relay time in the U.S. this year.

The time is a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Indoor championships and is .51 shy of the automatic qualifying standard.

In the women’s competition, Amber Sielaff broke the Idaho record in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 48 feet, 6-1/4 inches, which gave her a sixth-place finish in event. Vandals triple jumper Chris Kwaramba won his speciality with a leap of 52-6-3/4, which is a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA meet and third best in the U.S. this winter.

Kamangirira also is a provisional qualifier in the 400 meters (46.88) and Chiwira, who qualified for the indoors 400 last weekend, earned a provisional mark in the 200 meters with his time of 21.26 seconds.

There were 13 dual-meet competitions among seven teams. In men’s meets, Idaho beat Boise State (79-38) and Eastern Washington (79-47) but lost to Washington (76-49). In the women’s, the Vandals beat Boise State (82-30) and EWU (73-52) and lost to Washington (76-47).
