Welliver Captures Title At Silver Gloves Event
Dewey Welliver, a 15-year-old member of the Lilac City Boxing Club, defeated Angus Givins of Washington, D.C., to become the 139-pound National Silver Gloves boxing champion Saturday night in Kansas City, Mo.
Welliver was given a standing eight count in the second round after taking a blow on the chin by Givins, but outboxed his rival in the third and final round for a 5-0 decision.
Welliver plans to attend the Oregon Golden Gloves Tournament March 7 and then move on to the National Junior Olympics in June.
Track
University of Idaho track and field athletes broke two school records and earned provisional NCAA Indoor qualifying marks in four events Saturday at the annual Vandal Scoring Meet at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, Idaho.
The men’s 4x400 relay team of Tawanda Chiwira, Curtis Kunkel, Adekunle Adejuyigbe and Felix Kamangirira broke the Idaho indoor record with their winning time of 3:07.51, which is the second-fastest 4x400 relay time in the U.S. this year. The time is a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Indoor championships and is .51 shy of the automatic qualifying standard.
In the women’s competition, Amber Sielaff broke the Idaho record in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 48 feet, 6-1/4 inches, which gave her a sixth-place finish in event.
Vandals triple jumper Chris Kwaramba won his specialty with a leap of 52-6-3/4, which is a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA meet and third best in the U.S. this winter.
Kamangirira also is a provisional qualifier in the 400 meters (46.88) and Chiwira, who qualified for the indoors 400 last weekend, earned a provisional mark in the 200 meters with his time of 21.26 seconds.
For Washington State, 23 men and 13 women recorded personal bests and both teams swept their triple duals.
There were 13 dual-meet competitions among seven teams. Both Idaho teams went 2-1.
College baseball
Steve Curran drove in five runs, including a sixth-inning grand slam, to lead Washington State to a 17-5 victory over Houston in the first of two games for the Cougars at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego.
A late inning WSU comeback fueled by Casey Kelley’s two-run home run was stopped short in the nightcap as San Diego State defeated the Cougars 12-10.
Volleyball
Splash/Adidas Primecut Icon from Spokane defeated Nike Elite 10-15, 15-8, 16-14 to win the second tournament of the three-tournament qualifying series for the Sports Nation Tournament.
The under-18 elite team, led by Community College of Spokane coach Irene Matlock, features a number of players from last season’s All-GSL squad.
Team members include Missy Blackshire and Janelle Morrisette from Ferris, Erin Naipo from Lewis and Clark, Monica Abrahamson from Rogers, and Michelle Etter from Shadle Park.
