Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: I have a white coffee machine that has become stained inside the basket area where the ground coffee goes. I thought that you may have something up your sleeve that will turn it white again. Al Krzywosinski

Don’t you hate that! The stains that turn the filter basket that ugly yellow-brown are from the oils in the coffee. That’s why you need to clean it after each use with some warm, soapy water and a soft brush (a toothbrush works great).

Here’s a hint to clean a coffee filter basket that is stained. Just dampen a sponge and sprinkle some baking soda on it. Wipe over the stains, then let it sit for a while. Next, use a scrub brush to scrub away the stains. You may have to repeat the steps until the stains have disappeared, then wash and rinse as usual. - Heloise
