Q. We see a lot of miniature dogs but no miniature cats. Why not?

A. Cats of the household variety are miniatures. In a way.

Downsized from the big felines of fiercer fame. Now when you crossbreed the littler cats, says an expert, you usually get pets with an Oriental tabby look but without much change in size.

On stage for his London concert debut, the great Polish pianist Paderewski seated himself on the piano bench, waited a silent moment, and struck the first note. A cat from nobody-knows-where jumped onto his lap, curled up, and stayed put, purring. He finished the piece. The audience was charmed. He later said that cat kicked off his career.

Q. In printing, what’s “kiss pressure”?

A. Minimum pressure for proper ink transfer.

Q. A national magazine reports that the sexiest thing a woman can do in public is smile at a man. Why?

A. Our Love and War man does not find that claim altogether ridiculous. A smile suggests approval, does it not? It has long been known that a man approves of nothing so much as approval.
