Ukraine’s Vita Pavlysh produced the season’s best performance in the women’s shot put, 66 feet, 3 inches, at the Russian Winter indoor track and field meet in Moscow.

Svetlana Goncharenko of Russia set a Russian record in the women’s 100 meters, clocking 11.23 seconds. A week ago she ran the distance in 11.25 at Tampere, Finland.

Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia fell 2 seconds short in a bid for his second world record in two weeks, winning the 1,500 meters in 3 minutes, 33.27 seconds at the Flanders Indoor meet at Ghent, Belguim.

Romania’s Gabriela Szabo also was unsuccessful in a try at a world record in the women’s 5,000.

Szabo, the world outdoor champion, ran a strong early pace, but was isolated out front for the final 3,000 meters and finished in 15:07.41, more than 4 seconds off the world mark set in 1992 by Britain’s Liz McColgan.

At Coamo, Puerto Rico, Kenneth Cheruiyot dominated in the hills to win the San Blas International Half-Marathon, beating his Kenyan compatriot Patrick Muturi.

Cheruiyot finished in 1 hour, 3 minutes, 58 seconds.

Iglandini Gonzalez of Colombia set a women’s course record of 1:15:33, besting the previous mark of 1:15:57 set by American Maria Trujillo in 1990.
