Dollar Rises Vs. Mark, Falls Vs. Yen
The dollar rose against the German mark and other European currencies Monday amid renewed speculation about delays for a single European currency.
The dollar fell against the Japanese yen as traders remained pleased by prospects of Japan cleaning up its economic house.
But the market’s focus was on several issues concerning Economic Monetary Union, including a German constitutional challenge to the EMU.
EMU worries typically boost the mark,”but in this particular case, we’ve actually found that the dollar has been very well bid in European markets and several attempts to take it lower in the New York market failed,” said Stephen Flanagan, chief currency dealer at Erste Bank in New York.
