Fred Meyer To Open Wandermere Store

The doors of a new Fred Meyer store will open at 7 a.m. today at Division and Hastings in North Spokane’s Wandermere area.

Work began last June on the $19 million project, which includes the 165,000-square-foot store, 7,000 square feet available for lease by tenants and additional land for sale.

“The (type of) store we’re going to be building for the next couple of years is this one,” said Rob Boley, a spokesman for the Portland-based chain. “Spokane’s getting our prototype.”

Additional space in the complex already has been leased to Washington Mutual, Northwest Beauty Salon and PostNet, a packaging and mailing service.

Fred Meyer’s new store will employ about 250 full and part-time employees, most of whom will be hired locally.

In addition to its supermarket, nutrition center and pharmacy, the new store includes departments for pets, health and beauty aids, clothing, shoes, housewares, home decor, home improvement, garden, sporting goods, automotive, home office, cards, books, toys, home electronics and jewelry.

Fred Meyer currently operates 433 stores in 22 states.
