UI Interested In Mueller

The list of candidates for Idaho’s vacant athletic director’s job is forming and one name stands out as particularly intriguing.

Randy Mueller, Seattle Seahawks vice president of football operations, has been contacted by UI officials, The Spokesman-Review has learned.

Mueller is a native of St. Maries. He’s been with the Seahawks in various capacities since 1983.

UI assistant A.D. Mike Marlow and Utah associate A.D. Peter Hart have said they plan on applying.

Other potential candidates include Alaska-Anchorage A.D. Tim Dillon and Portland State A.D. Jim Sterk. Both were non-committal when asked if they’ll apply.

Dillon has been at Alaska-Anchorage six years. He also serves as vice chancellor.

“I need to take a look at the information that’s been sent to me (from Idaho), speak to some folks and pursue matters from there,” Dillon said.

Sterk, who has been at Portland State for 2-1/2 years, is in the midst of a $3 million capital campaign.

“I’ve got a lot of irons in the fire here,” Sterk said. “I’m holding back, if you will, from really going after it. But you never say never.”

Hart was a finalist when Oval Jaynes was hired at Idaho in October, 1996. Marlow, a Washington State graduate, came to UI in 1995 from Montana. Marlow’s and Hart’s primary duties are fund-raising.

UI’s deadline for applications is Thursday.

The Spokane Vandals Booster Club will hold its weekly meeting at Finnerty’s Red Lion at noon today. It will be a basketball highlights luncheon.
