Plenty Of Good News For Cv

Dave Trimmer And Chris Derrick S Staff writer

To the victor go the spoils.

Central Valley’s state championship football team received recognition beyond the state borders.

The Bears were ranked seventh in the West by California-based Student Sports magazine.

Nine seniors have already committed to play in college next year and two more are likely to sign letters-of-intent in the near future. CV and Bethel lead the state with seven players signed with NCAA Division II schools or higher.

“One of the things that happens when you win a game like that is your players become faster and bigger,” CV coach Rick Giampietri said. “It was a fun recruiting season for me. I’m glad so many players want to keep going. I hope they still want to play (in the fall when they’re starting over).”

Student Sports didn’t put CV in its final nationwide top 25 but it did name senior lineman Wil Beck to its All-West Coast defense and put running back Tyree Clowe on its All-American team for juniors.

Beck is headed to Idaho. Linebacker Garrett Graham is going to Oregon, lineman Brandon Bogue to Eastern Washington and quarterback Chad Adamson, linebacker Courtney Brown, defensive back Zac Scott and lineman Chris White to Central Washington. Also, defensive lineman Marc Hinckley and defensive back Nate McFarlane are going to Ricks College. Lineman Preston Crossman and center Jason Robisch are deciding between two options.

Seven quarterbacks in Washington signed with Division I schools.

The issue of Student Sports with CV featured De La Salle, of Concord, Calif., which ended the season with a 76-game winning streak. The previous longest football streak, which ended in 1975, was 72 by Hudson High of Michigan. Some ex-players from that Michigan team were at the game when De La Salle broke the record.

School comes first

This year’s District 7-B basketball tournament has undertaken a different format that will cut down on the athletes’ missed time in the classroom.

Past tourneys have run Monday through Saturday, 1:15 to 9:15 p.m., at Spokane Falls Community College.

SFCC is still a site, but Spokane Community College has been added to ensure an all-evening format during the first four days. Games are scheduled at 6 and 7:45 at both sites.

Also new for the first four days: Monday and Wednesday will include all girls games, Tuesday and Thursday all boys games. In the past, the tourney alternated boys and girls games each day.

Friday and Saturday’s games, all at SFCC, will alternate girl/boy as in the past.

And the band played on

Wilbur-Creston band director Jim Cox estimates that his four seniors have played 2.4 million measures of music during Wildcats football, volleyball and basketball games.

So a tip of the baton goes out to Jesse Weaver, trombone; Rose Sliger, tenor saxophone; Leonard Johnson, baritone sax; and Kristin Tinnel, flute.
