Idaho Moves Into Third Place With Road Victory

Fri., Feb. 13, 1998

Cameron Banks scored a career-high 28 points to lead the University of Idaho past the University of North Texas 100-86 in a Big West Conference men’s basketball game Thursday night.

Banks helped the Vandals recover from a 41-37 halftime deficit to take control midway through the second half. The victory pushed them into third place in the Big West Conference’s Eastern Division. The top four teams in each division advance to the Big West Tournament March 6-8 at Reno, Nev.

Idaho improved to 7-4 in the Big West (13-8 overall) while North Texas remained in the Eastern Division cellar at 2-9, 3-18. After inching ahead of Boise State, which lost 73-52 to New Mexico State, the Vandals travel to Las Cruces for a Saturday night game against the Aggies.

“That was a great win for our program and for our kids,” said Idaho coach David Farrar, whose team defeated the Eagles for the second time in one week. “I was real pleased with our second-half adjustment. I was pleased with our kids’ effort and enthusiasm in this game.”

Idaho’s saving grace was solid shooting. With Banks hitting on 5 of 8 field-goal attempts in the first 20 minutes, the Vandals hit at a 48 percent clip. Their range was better still in the second half when they drilled 69 percent of their shots, finishing at 58.3.

In addition to Banks’ 28, Avery Curry had 21 points. Clifford Gray and Curry had seven rebounds each to help the Vandals to a 42-30 advantage on the boards.
