Lackluster Eagles Pay For Latest Loss

It’s hard to imagine which was more painful for the Eastern Washington University women’s basketball team Thursday night at Reese Court.

Was it the blowout a 73-57 lackluster loss to Cal State Northridge or the aftermath a serious sprinting session orchestrated by coach Jocelyn Pfeifer?

“After you lose so many games, it gets hard,” said the first-year coach, clearly dejected by her team’s effort as well as its 4-18 overall, 2-10 Big Sky Conference record.

“But you need to start to build somewhere and for next year. We should be playing for pride now. That’s all we have left.”

The Eagles came out slowly and never got it together until the first-stringers outscored the Matadors reserves 18-1 in the final 7 minutes.

By then, it was far too late. Eastern had fallen behind 37-20 at the half, and Northridge (11-10, 7-4) led by as much as 72-39 with 7:21 remaining.

The Eagles’ starters - who were pulled with 16 minutes remaining and returned with 9:22 left - were a combined 8 of 34 from the field as the team finished 14 of 43.

The brightest spot for EWU came with 16:10 left in the second half when Courtney Horner’s 3-point basket marked the team’s 116th of the year, breaking the school record set in 1990.

Juli Carlson led the Eagles in scoring with 13 points.

Northridge’s best offensive weapons were freshman guard Edniesha Curry, who scored from what seems like every possible spot. Curry, the Big Sky’s leading scorer (15.9 points per game), finished with 15 points.
