New Z3 M And 3-Series Cars On Way

If you thought the Z3 6 was hot, wait’ll you get a look at the Z3 M. Powered by the same 240-hp, 3.2-liter inline six that motivates the M3 coupe and sedan on these shores, it’s gonna scat. Early tests say this little barn-burner will put away Porsche’s current edition Boxster.

The 318is coupe and 318i convertible will be replaced by the 323is and 323i, respectively. They’re powered by a new 2.5-liter, 168-hp inline 6. The 318ti and 318 sedan still get their power from a 1.9-liter inline 4.

In May, we’ll see a convertible version of the M3 and by late summer the all-new 3-Series will debut as a 1999 model.

The 5-Series cars will get a new standard-equipment Head Protection System (an airbag for the cranium) and optional Sport Package with heavy-duty suspension, 18-inch wheels and Z-rated tires.

The new 7-Series cars have already been introduced; for ‘98, they get the Head Protection System and optional rear-seat airbags. The 8-Series has gone away.
