Political Limo Service

Germany and automaker Daimler-Benz are giving Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze, above, a new car, valued at $350,000, to replace an armored Mercedes limousine damaged in an assassination attempt. Germany is indebted to Shevardnadze for supporting German unification in 1990 in his former role as Soviet foreign minister. Shevardnadze’s old car, also a gift from Germany and Daimler-Benz, was damaged by gunfire and blackened by flames when his motorcade was ambushed Monday in the Georgian capital, Tbilsi. Shevardnadze was not hurt.
