Centennial Offers First Hurdle For Lc Girls

The Lake City High girls basketball team will return to the site of its last loss next week with a simple mission: redemption.

The No. 1-ranked Timberwolves fell to Borah in the State A-1 championship game last year at the Idaho Center in Nampa.

They’ll be out to make sure this season doesn’t end on a sour note.

LC (23-0) will meet a familiar state rival, Centennial (21-4), in an opener Thursday afternoon at 2:15 PST. Centennial defeated Minico in a cross-district playoff Saturday.

The Timberwolves will be joined at state by Post Falls (17-8), which topped Boise in a cross-district qualifier Saturday. The Trojans take on District IV-V champ Highland (19-5) in the first evening game at 5:30.

In the other openers, Borah (15-8) takes on Madison (22-1) and District III champ Eagle (22-1) meets Blackfoot (17-8).

If LC and Borah win their openers they’d meet in the semifinals Friday. Most expect LC and Eagle to meet in the championship Saturday.

Here’s a look at the other state tournaments.

A-2

The first two days of the tournament will be held at Nampa High School. The state title game will be played at the Idaho Center.

District I-II runner-up Bonners Ferry (17-5) takes on No. 1-ranked and District VI champ Shelley (21-3) in the first game at 12:45.

In other openers, District I-II champ Moscow (19-3) meets Sugar-Salem (16-10); District V champ American Falls (18-4) and District III champ Emmett (15-8) tangle; and District IV champ Jerome (18-4), which knocked off defending champ Buhl, takes on Bishop Kelly (11-13).

A-3

The first two days of the tourney will be held at Middleton High School. The championship game will be played at the Idaho Center.

District II should make it five straight championships. District II champ and top-ranked Lapwai (23-0) opens against Filer (18-6).

In other openers, defending champ Prairie (16-9), down from last season, meets Homedale (22-1); Declo (18-5) takes on West Jefferson (22-6); and Butte County (22-1) goes against West Side (16-6).

Prairie defeated Lapwai in an all-Central Idaho League final last year.

A-4

The tourney for the smallest schools adopted the 16-team format after it was overwhelmingly accepted last year. The tourney begins Wednesday at two sites.

Defending champ Troy (22-1) again is the team to beat.

District I champ Kootenai (14-6) takes on Garden Valley (18-1) at Skyview High in Nampa at 5:30.

In other openers at Skyview, Raft River (19-3) meets Cambridge (14-11); Sho-Ban (21-1), making its first trip to state, takes on Murtaugh (15-10); and Genesee (18-7) battles Greenleaf Friends (16-8).

District I runner-up Lakeside (17-4), which is in Troy’s bracket, opens against Rockland (15-7), at 2:15 at Kuna High School.

In other openers at Kuna, Troy goes against Hagerman (17-7); Rimrock (21-3) takes on Dietrich (18-8); and Shoshone (19-4) meets Midvale (19-6).
