Pullman Wins Easily, Moves Closer To Title

Pullman took its biggest step toward the Great Northern League title by jumping on visiting Chewelah 59-37 Saturday.

Brent Cumming scored 20 points and Brooke Randall had seven rebounds as the sixth-ranked Greyhounds (15-2, 10-2) sent the Cougars (12-6, 8-4) into a tie for third place by sweeping the season series.

Pullman has fifth-place Newport and seventh-place Lakeside left on its schedule.

Chewelah’s Travis Meserve had nine rebounds. The Cougars also have no games left against upper-division teams.

Danny Ellersick scored 25, hitting 7 of 10 from the floor in the second half, as the Grizzlies (9-9, 4-8) knocked the visiting Indians (11-7, 8-4) out of second place and continued their big improvement in the second half of the season.

Sean Mumford grabbed 16 rebounds for Newport, which is 4-2 against GNL foes in the second half after completing the first half 0-6. Eli Marsh hit 4 of 4 free throws in the final quarter.

Brandon Moore finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds as the visiting Cardinals (12-6, 9-3) topped the Stags (4-14, 2-10) to take over second place alone, one game behind Pullman.

Richard Brown and Jeff Mitchell combined for 17 assists for ML, which played its second consecutive game without top guard Andre Jackson.

East Valley opens district at EWU Tuesday against No. 2 West Valley (11-9). Clarkston opens against No. 1 seed, 10th-ranked Cheney (15-5).

Lewiston’s Scott Couch came off the bench to score 15 in the fourth quarter. Sandpoint plays Post Falls on Monday in a regional loser-out playoff.

Colfax opens the double-elimination district at 5 p.m. Friday at Mead High against second-seeded Reardan (13-7). KF opens at 8:30 p.m. Friday against league champion Freeman (15-5).
