Senate Oks Soda Break

By a vote of 35-11, the Senate on Saturday approved a bill to cut the soda pop tax.

SB6602 allows businesses that sell soda pop to credit against their business and occupation tax half the tax they pay on soda pop syrup. The tax is currently $1 a gallon.

The measure, which would cost the treasury about $4 million a year, passed over protest of Democrats, who argued the money was needed to pay for public education.

The measure now goes to the House.
