WSU Lambastes Oregon State

From Staff And Wire Reports

College women

Freshman Tricia Lamb had 17 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and only one turnover Saturday as Washington State defeated Oregon State 75-67 in a Pacific-10 Conference women’s basketball game at Corvallis, Ore.

Lamb, coming off an outstanding career at St. John-Endicott High School, almost single-handedly made sure the Cougars snapped out of a five-game losing streak.

Overcoming Oregon State’s one-point halftime lead, WSU (10-12 overall, 4-9 in Pac-10 play) used a stingy defense and Lamb’s all-around play as the catalyst for a victory that sent Oregon State (6-16, 1-12), to its ninth consecutive defeat.

Lamb was one of four Cougars in double figures.

Alke Dietel and Yvonne Kunze scored 12 points each and Jennifer Kerns added 11 off the bench.

Monica Watts did everything she could to rally Oregon State, scoring a game-high 21 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Nicole McAllister added 16 points for the Beavers and Sissel Pierce scored 10 before fouling out.

The Pirates (10-12 overall, 9-7 Northwest Conference) failed to score a field goal in the last 13:12, but their 10-of-17 shooting from the free-throw line was good enough to hold off the Pioneers (3-19, 2-14) in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

The victory kept Whitworth in the hunt for the Northwest Conference’s fourth postseason berth. The Pirates have two regular-season road games remaining. The Pioneers have lost eight straight.

Whitworth led by as many as 15 points at 48-33 when Cindy Viall hit a 3-pointer inside the 14-minute mark, but that was the last bucket for the Pirates.
