Tar Heels Still No. 1

Compiled From Wire Services

North Carolina, Duke, Arizona and Kansas held the top four spots in the AP men’s college basketball poll, continuing to separate themselves as the possible No. 1 seeds for the NCAA Tournament.

The Tar Heels (26-1) were again the runaway No. 1 choice with 68 first-place votes and 1,748 points, 108 more than Duke (23-2). Arizona (22-3) had the other two No. 1 votes and 1,605 points, while Kansas (27-3) had 1,587 points.

Stanford moved up to 10th, while UCLA dropped to 12th.

Tennessee remained a unanimous No. 1 in the women’s basketball poll and moved closer to a rare feat. With only three polls remaining, Tennessee is on track to become only the fourth team to stay No. 1 all season.

Stanford climbed one spot to fifth. Arizona is ranked ninth and Washington dropped to 21st.

Texas A&M coach Tony Barone, whose 1991 arrival brought hopes of a basketball revival, will be dismissed as coach after this season.

Athletic director Wally Groff released a statement saying Barone will be reassigned as his special assistant.
