Churches Plan Events To Observe Start Of Lent

FROM FOR THE RECORD (Tuesday, February 24, 1998): Correction Service location: Salem Lutheran Church will hold an Ash Wednesday service this week at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 1823 E. Dean, at 7 p.m. The location was not listed in a North Voice article Thursday.

Lent begins next week and many North Side churches will be observing Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, with a special worship service. A few will also host meals in observance of Shrove Tuesday, otherwise known as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras.

Here’s a listing of some of the events:

St. Peter Lutheran Church, 4620 N. Regal, will host its annual Shrove Tuesday pancake dinner at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. There is no set price for the meal, but donations will be accepted to help cover expenses.

Those who still have palm fronds from last year’s Easter Sunday worship service are asked to bring them to the church Tuesday evening so they can be burned for ashes used during the Ash Wednesday service, which will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 1620 N. Monroe, will host a pancake supper at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Emmanuel Presbyterian Church will host a potluck supper at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a special worship service. Those attending the dinner are asked to bring their own table service and a hot dish, salad, or dessert. Beverages and rolls will be provided.

The church is located at 1926 W. Chelan. For more information, call the church office at 326-1252.

The Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 3909 W. Rowan, will observe Ash Wednesday with a worship service at 7 p.m. In addition, Wednesday evening services will be held each week through April 1. Soup suppers will be served before each service at 6 p.m.

Messiah Lutheran Church will observe the beginning of Lent with worship services at 2 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday. A soup supper will be served prior to the last service at 6 p.m.

The two worship services will be repeated every Wednesday during Lent.

St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2159 N. Hamilton, will host a potluck dinner at 6 p.m. on Wednesday followed by a worship service at 7 p.m. Those attending are asked to bring their own table service.

The worship service will be held at the same time each Wednesday during Lent through April 1. A soup supper will be served each week at 6:15 p.m. For more information, call the church at 483-8192.

Salem Lutheran Church, 1428 W. Broadway, will celebrate Ash Wednesday with a worship service at 7 p.m.

North Hill Christian Church will observe the beginning of Lent with a 7 p.m. worship service on Wednesday. The church is located at 4620 N. Post.

Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 7307 N. Nevada, will have worship services at noon and 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The services will be repeated each Wednesday during Lent.

Audubon Park United Methodist Church will have a 7 p.m. worship service on Wednesday. The church is located at 3908 N. Driscoll Blvd.

Indonesian Missionaries to speak

Missionaries Arny and Wanda Humble, who have served in Indonesia since 1961, will be speaking at Trinity Baptist Church at the 8:45 and 11 a.m., and 5:30 p.m. worship services on Sunday.

During their stay in Indonesia, Arny taught seminary classes in the area of missiology and Wanda taught child psychology and counseling. The couple plans to return to Indonesia in March.

The church is located at 6528 N. Monroe.
