Churches Will Offer Ash Wednesday Services

Lent begins next week, and many South Side churches will be observing Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, with a special worship service. A few will also host meals in observance of Shrove Tuesday, otherwise known as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras.

Here are some of the events:

Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ, 411 S. Washington, will host a Shrove Tuesday pancake supper at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Entertainment will be provided by church members in the form of a talent show.

Some delectable desserts will also be auctioned off during a silent auction that will run throughout the evening. Funds raised from the auction will be used to send church youth to summer camp.

Cheney United Methodist Church will host a Shrove Tuesday pancake supper at 6 p.m. The youth of the church will prepare the meal. There will be time for fun and games at 7 p.m., and a worship service will conclude the evening at 7:30 p.m.

The church, located at 204 Fourth Street in Cheney, will also have a worship service at 7 p.m. Wednesday to mark the beginning of Lent.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 5720 S. Perry, will host a William Panshake Mardi Gras dinner at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Church members will provide entertainment in the form of a talent show.

St. Stephen’s will observe Ash Wednesday with worship services at 7 a.m., noon and 7 p.m.

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th, will celebrate Shrove Tuesday with a pancake supper and crafts. Kids and kids-at-heart adults will have the opportunity to make Mardi Gras masks.

The evening will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The cost is $3.50 for adults, $2.50 for children, or $10 per family.

Manito United Methodist Church, 3220 S. Grand, Blvd., will observe Ash Wednesday with a pancake supper at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The meal will be followed by a worship service at 7 p.m.

Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Cheney will mark the beginning of Lent with worship services at 5 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday. A soup and bread supper will be served at 6 p.m.

Covenant Christian Church, 5616 S. Palouse Highway, will host the Emanon Youth Choir from North Hill Christian Church at the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday.

The church will also observe the beginning of Lent with a worship service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Central United Methodist Church will have an Ash Wednesday worship service at 7 p.m. The church is located at 518 W. Third.

Centenary United Methodist Church, 1012 S. Freya, will have a worship service at 7 p.m. on Ash Wednesday.

Dinner planned for Saturday

The Unitarian Universalist Church will host a Transylvania Partnership dinner at 6 p.m. Saturday. The Erdely Hungarian Dance Ensemble will perform.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for children, or $20 for families. The proceeds will benefit the church’s sister church, the Unitarian Church of Felsorakos in Romania.

Irish reverend to speak

The Lincoln Heights Congregational Church will host the Rev. Ken Needham from Ireland at the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday. Needham, a former atheist, will speak about his work, which has also taken him to Peru and Bolivia. The church is located at 3527 E. 29th. The public is invited to attend.

The Lincoln Heights church is also planning a seminar called “A Biblical Portrait of Marriage.” The 12-week seminar will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. each Thursday beginning March 5.

The class is open to married couples and engaged couples as well as singles thinking about marriage and older teens who want to learn what the Bible has to say about marriage.

The seminar is free, but there will be a workbook available for $9. Child care will be provided.

Missionaries to speak in Cheney

Cheney Community Church, 1307 Third St., will host missionaries Roger and Diana Ward during Sunday’s Christian education hour at 9:30 a.m. and the worship service at 10:45 a.m. The couple, who have been assigned to Baja, Mexico, are currently working on raising the money needed for their journey.
