Gweene Mains Rathdrum, Idaho

Viewing for Gweene E. Mains, 73, will be held today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls. Graveside service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Pinegrove Cemetery in Rathdrum.

Mrs. Mains, who was born in Pilot Rock, Ore., died Tuesday.

She lived in Lewiston and moved to Rathdrum in 1957. Mrs. Mains was a homemaker and worked as a cook at Broadway Truck Stop, before retiring in 1977.

Her husband, Max, died in 1985.

Survivors include a son, Ernest “Bo” Marley of Hauser Lake, Idaho; three daughters, Sandra Orman of Spokane, Linda Haughton of Coeur d’Alene and Karen McGrath of Rathdrum; three sisters, Minnie Wright, Betty Hicks and Alice Thomas, all of California; a brother, Issac Luce of Lenore, Idaho; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Ollie Hartley Spokane

Visitation for Ollie M. Hartley, 74, will be from noon to 6 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Hartley, who was born in Butte County, S.D., died Tuesday in Vancouver, Wash., while visiting her son.

In 1942 she married Theodore Hartley in Superior, Mont., and they moved to Spokane in 1952.

She worked as a licensed beauty operator in her early years in the Seattle area and was a homemaker after moving to Spokane.

Mrs. Hartley was a member of the Church of the Open Bible, where she served as a deaconess for many years.

Her husband, Theodore Hartley, died in 1985.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Hartley of Colbert and Paul Hartley of Vancouver; two brothers, Dale Curtis of Elk and Robert Curtis of Bellingham; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Carmen Lopez Seattle

Funeral service for Carmen Zavala Lopez, 99, will be at 2 p.m. today at Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in Spokane. Interment will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lopez, who was born in Mexico, died Sunday.

A homemaker, she moved to Spokane from Texas in 1951. She moved to Seattle two years ago.

Her husband, Ismael, died in 1992.

She is survived by three sons, Mordecai and Nicanor Lopez, both of Spokane, and Ishmael Lopez of Snohomish, Wash.; four daughters, Elizabeth Burt of Sacramento, Calif., Ester Musacchia and Martha Burge, both of Seattle, and Rachel Macri of Spokane; 19 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church.

Cecil Howerton Spokane

Memorial service for Cecil E. Howerton, 80, will be at 11 a.m. today at Hennessey Smith Funeral Home.

Mr. Howerton, a resident of Spokane for 62 years, died Monday.

He was born in Culdesac, Idaho, and served in the Army during World War II in Korea and the Philippines.

Mr. Howerton worked as a manager in local restaurants.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge, Good Sam Camping Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Four Square Life Center.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; two sons, Larry Christensen of Post Falls and Wesley Christensen of Spokane; two daughters, Penny Whipple of Puyallup, Wash., and Cheryl Zicha of Spokane; a brother, Roy Howerton of Spokane; two sisters, Lena Roberts and Helen Felice, both of Spokane; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the North Central Care Center.

Judith Anastasi Butler Spokane

Memorial service for Judith G. Anastasi Butler, 51, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangement.

Mrs. Butler, who was a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Sunday.

She graduated in 1964 from Central Valley High School.

Mrs. Butler worked as a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Anastasi of Seattle; a son, Paul Anastasi of Spokane; and her father, Gail Butler of Veradale.

LeRoy Shearer Spokane

Graveside service for LeRoy A. Shearer, 75, will be at 11 a.m. today at Pines Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Shearer, who was a 32-year resident of Spokane, died Sunday.

He was born in Lyons, S.D., and served in the Navy during World War II.

In 1948 he married Eunice Kroeger in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Mr. Shearer worked as a wildlife biologist.

Survivors include his wife; a son, David Shearer of Vancouver, Wash.; a daughter, Candice Sherry of Little Canada, Minn.; a brother, Dennis Shearer of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a sister, Helen White of Glendora, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Lutheran Church or Hospice of Spokane.

Robert Cox Coeur d’Alene

Visitation for Robert Merrill Cox, 75, will be held Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Service will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace in Spokane.

Mr. Cox, who was born in Eugene, Ore., died Monday.

He grew up and graduated from high school in Portland, and went on to receive a bachelor of science degree from Reed College in Portland.

Mr. Cox served with the Navy during World War II, and later received a master’s degree in chemistry from Oregon State University.

He moved to Spokane in 1950 and worked as a chemist for Kaiser Aluminum for 20 years.

Mr. Cox moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1973 and worked for the Bunker Hill Co. in Kellogg before retiring.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Betty.

Mr. Cox was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Coeur d’Alene and a past member of the Opportunity Presbyterian Church in Spokane, and had served as an elder and a deacon.

He also served as a trustee for the Mission Valley Park in Spokane.

Survivors include a son, Robert Cox of Ridgefield, Wash.; four daughters, Cathryn Cox of Pullman, Carol Dorsey of Harrison, Idaho, Janet Allison of Edmonds, Wash., and Joan Schooler of Olympia; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Vera Actor Spokane

Graveside service for Vera V. Actor, 88, will be at 3 p.m. today at Riverside Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Actor, who was born in Darrington, Wash., died Tuesday.

She owned and operated a beauty shop in Rockford, before moving back to Spokane in 1942.

Mrs. Actor then worked for Jensen Byrd for 12 years and for Eastern State Hospital until her retirement in 1974.

Her first husband, Mickey Royce, died in 1953 and her second husband, Wayne Actor, died in 1971.

Survivors include a daughter, Kay Misterek of Spokane; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Della Fleming Lacrosse, Wash.

Funeral service for Della Jean Fleming, 86, will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Lacrosse. Interment will follow at the Lacrosse Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Fleming, who was born in Hooper, Wash., died Saturday.

She graduated in 1931 from Lacrosse High School, and that same year married Delmer Fleming.

They made their home in Lacrosse and she was a homemaker.

Mrs. Fleming was a member of the Lacrosse United Methodist Church, where she served as church treasurer for many years, the Farm Women’s Club, Daughter of the Pioneers of Washington, Ground Observer Corps and a Girl Scout leader.

Her husband died in 1965.

Survivors include a son, Daimond Fleming of Lacrosse; two daughters, Sue Smathers of Colville, Wash., and Carol Hubbard of Renton, Wash.; two sisters, Beulah Simpson of Endicott, Wash., and Irene Parker of Silverdale, Wash.; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Anthony ‘Dick’ Wright Spokane

Visitation for Anthony Richard “Dick” Wright, 70, will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hennessey Smith Funeral Home. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Wright, who had been a resident of Spokane for 50 years, died Sunday.

He was born in Anaconda, Mont., and served in the Army from 1945 to 1946.

Mr. Wright graduated from Gonzaga University and started his radio career as a news reporter for KHQ in 1951.

He served in various capacities, including salesman, sales manager and vice president, at KZUN AM-FM from 1955 to 1972.

Mr. Wright was then named general sales manager of KXLY AM-FM in 1972. He established Dick Wright Public Relations in 1974 and operated the business until his retirement from the advertising field.

He served as president of the Spokane Press Club, the Inland Northwest Sportswriters and Broadcasters and was a member of the Gonzaga University Bulldog Club.

Mr. Wright was a well-known sports broadcaster for the Inland Northwest from 1956 until his retirement in 1997.

He received numerous awards for his contributions to the sports arena, including induction into the Inland Northwest Sports Hall of Fame and recipient of the Greater Spokane Sports Association’s Award for Excellence in Sports Development in the Inland Northwest.

Mr. Wright was also named Communicator of the Year by the Toastmasters of America and received the Distinguished American Award from the National Football Hall of Fame. He was most recently honored by Gonzaga University for 50 years of dedication and service to the university.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Porter-Wright; three daughters, Michele Fisher of Ridgefield, Conn., JoAnn Schauf of Coppell, Texas, and Kathryn McGlocklin of Spokane; four sons, Timothy Wright of Anchorage, Alaska, Daniel and Robert Wright, both of Spokane, and Laurence Wright of Seattle; a stepdaughter, Wendy Porter of New York City; and 15 grandchildren.

Calvin Riddell Spokane

No service will be held for Calvin Riddell, 80, at his request. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Riddell, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Thursday.

He had served in the Army and Navy and later worked in sales and advertising.

Mr. Riddell is survived by three daughters, Claudia Franklin of Kennewick, Stephenie Morgan of Chicago and Gayle Hutchins of Seattle; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Jack Hewson Sr. Spokane

Memorial service for Jack M. Hewson Sr., 57, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Driscoll Boulevard Baptist Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hewson, a 23-year resident of Spokane, died Monday.

He was born in Anchorage, Alaska, and worked as a painter for Holy Family Hospital.

Mr. Hewson was a member of Driscoll Boulevard Baptist Church.

Survivors include his companion, Alice Dill Hewson; a son, Jack Hewson Jr.; two daughters, Mary Amerio and Tina Garcia; his mother, Mary Walker; a sister, Merrily Kaufmann; and seven grandchildren.

Daniel Balcom Inchelium, Wash.

Funeral service for Daniel Robert Balcom, 71, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Open Door Congregational Church in Deer Park. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at the Wilbur City Cemetery in Wilbur, Wash. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Balcom, who was born in Spokane, died Saturday.

He served in the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific.

Mr. Balcom farmed and raised, pigs, corn, wheat and rye. He also cut and sold lumber.

From 1958 to 1961 he cut railroad cross-ties for Washington Water Power and also drove school bus for 13 years.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Betty Lou; four sons, Benjamin and Calvin Balcom, both of Inchelium, Roger Balcom of Kettle Falls, Wash., and Marvin Balcom of Craig, Alaska; eight daughters, Beverly Jolley, Betsy Stensgar and Wanda Johnson, all of Inchelium, Naomi Terzieff of Metaline Falls, Wash., Valorie Baker of Auburn, Wash., Linda Waters of Mt. Vernon, Wash., Imogene Berghouse of Ramona, Calif., and Sylvia Lenz of Spokane; two brothers, Nelson Balcom of Kettle Falls, Wash., and Monte Balcom of Easton, Wash.; a sister, Lucile Mcghehey of Turner, Ore.; 27 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Percy Achre Spokane

Memorial service for Percy M. Achre, 78, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Millwood Presbyterian Church. Hennessey Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Achre, who was born in Spokane, died Monday.

Starting in 1935 he played in the 161st Infantry Washington National Guard Band for about five years.

Mr. Achre served in the Navy during World War II.

He began his railroad career as a switchman with the Great Northern Railroad, moving on to yard master, train master and finally terminal manager. He was later terminal superintendent for Burlington Northern Railroad. He retired in 1979.

Mr. Achre was a member of the Burlington Northern Veteran’s Association, Millwood Presbyterian Church, and was a past president of the Spokane Hillyard Rotary Club, where he received the Paul Harris Award in 1997.

He was also past treasurer of the Eagles Band, past president of the El Katif Shrine Band, and a member of the Brotherhood of Friends and Sons of Norway.

His wife of 47 years, Inez, died in 1986.

Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Simmons of Clinton, Wash., and Carol Phillips of Papillion, Neb.; three sisters, Catherine Chew and Lucille Gump, both of Spokane, and Evelyn Muck of Tucson, Ariz.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Millwood Presbyterian Church Hospice of Spokane or Shriner’s Hospital for Children.

Jerry Morrison Sr. Spokane

Memorial service for Jerry L. Morrison Sr., 60, will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the Pines Mausoleum. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Morrison, who was born in Minnesota, died Saturday.

He served in the Army for two years in the 1950s, and in 1963 moved to Spokane from Minnesota.

Mr. Morrison worked as a selfemployed auto mechanic for 30 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Cindy Young of San Diego and Gina Nelson of Spokane; a son, Jerry Morrison Jr. of Otis Orchards; and a grandson.
