Cut Cable Knocks Out Long-Distance Service

Long-distance telephone service for at least 190,000 customers in Eastern Washington was knocked out Thursday when a contractor accidentally cut a fiber-optic cable north of Pasco.

The 11 a.m. break caused disruptions between eight regional US West communication centers, company spokeswoman JoAnn Ficca said.

About 70,000 customers in Pasco and 58,000 in Yakima were unable to make long-distance calls to other affected areas, Ficca said.

Crews from US West and GTE, which provides local service for some areas of Eastern Washington, completed repairs by 8:30 p.m. , DataTimes
