Kucera Ousts Korda

Karol Kucera upset top-seed Petr Korda in the quarterfinals of the $1 million European Community Championship in Antwerp, Belgium. Korda would have unseated Sampras at the top of the ATP rankings if he’d won the ECC.

Instead, he fell 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to Kucera.

Kucera faces Greg Rusedski in the semifinals today. Australia’s Patrick Rafter will play defending Champion Marc Rosset in the other semifinal.

Gustavo Kuerten rebounded to beat Mark Woodforde 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the $700,000 St. Jude Indoor tournament in Memphis, Tenn.

Kuerten, seeded third and ranked 11th on the ATP Tour, will meet No. 2 seed Michael Chang in today’s semifinal. Chang was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over ninth-seeded Richard Fromberg.

No. 4 seed Mark Philippousis beat fifth-seeded Thomas Enqvist 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). He will meet top-seeded Marcelo Rios, a 6-2, 6-3 winner over unseeded Grant Stafford, in the other semifinal.

Top-seeded Jana Novotna beat No. 8 Lisa Raymond 6-1, 7-5, and advanced to the semifinals of the Faber Grand Prix tourney in Hanover, Germany.

In other quarterfinals, 16-year-old Anna Kournikova beat No. 6 Anke Huber 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, and unseeded Patty Schnyder beat No. 7 Nathalie Tauziat 6-4, 6-3. Novotna plays Kournikova in today’s semifinals and Schnyder plays Sabine Appelmans.
