In a holiday-shortened week of rallies to record levels - the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 8,414 - a big beneficiary was Beneficial, whose shares soared $30.625 Tuesday to $112.875 on the New York Stock Exchange. Driving the gain was news that the country’s third largest consumer finance firm may sell the whole company. Beneficial closed the week at $115. Steelcase, the big office furniture maker, sold 12 million shares of an initial public offering at $28 each, rose to $33.625 Wednesday (NYSE) and closed the week at $34.25. Lucent Technologies announced a 2-for-1 split and increased dividend, which drove up shares $5.875 Wednesday, $2 Thursday and another $2.50 Friday (NYSE), closing the week at $102.50.

What’s not

After reports that ConAgra will not achieve double-digit earnings growth as expected, because of the troubled meat and poultry businesses, the company’s shares fell $3.06 Tuesday to $28.94 (NYSE), and closed the week at $28.50. Medtronic shares fell $3.75 Thursday to $52.25 (NYSE) as the Minneapolis-based medical-device maker reported a 94 percent drop in quarterly profits. The firm closed the week at $53.125..
