Whit Men, Women Each Win Twice In Swim Meet

Whitworth’s swimming teams each took two first places on the second day of the Northwest Conference Championships Friday in Portland.

Mindy Gailbraith swam to first place in the 200-yard freestyle and Alison Eckenroad won the 100 backstroke. Whitworth also showed strength in the women’s relays, finishing second in the 800 freestyle and third in the 200 medley. Pirate Kim Adler was third in the 400 individual medley, giving the women fourth place among eight teams.

For the men, Jeremiah Pappe swam to a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle for Whitworth, which also won the 800 freestyle relay. The men picked up a pair of thirdplace finishes from Ben Swinehart in the 400 individual medley and Dan Welch in the 100 breakstroke. The men are fifth.

High school swimming

Joe Covey of West Valley had third- and fourthplace finishes in the finals of the Washington 3A-2A boys championships at King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Covey was third in the 100 freestyle in 47.06 seconds. Jeff Guyman of Mercer Island won in 45.73. Cheney’s Nate Gosse was 11th (49.39).

Covey was fourth in the 50 freestyle in in 21.54. Guyman won in a meet-record 20.82.

Cheney took seventh in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:32.29. Pullman was 14th in 1:34.10. Mt. Rainier won in 1:28.02.

Mercer Island won the team title.

Professional boxing

A heavyweight title contender, a former Olympic champion and a local boxer highlight the fight card March 5 at the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Bingo/ Casino in Worley, Idaho.

Heavyweight Jeremy Williams, rated No. 6 by the WBO, according to a Tribal Bingo/Casino press release, will take on Rocky Pepeli (19-10-1).

Williams is 31-2 with losses to Larry Donald and Henry Akinwande. Williams has defeated Bert Cooper and Jesse Ferguson, both by TKO.

Todd Foster (38-4) of Missoula will fight for the first time at the Bingo/Casino. Spokane’s Rick Welliver (9-2-1) also will be in action.

Sam Hampton (19-5-2) will take on Josh Imardiyi (16-2) in a co-main event.

Golf

Sun Dance Golf Course will open Tuesday. Weather permitting, carts will be available.

College baseball

Washington State starter Wade Parrish threw his second career complete game and Steve Curran hit his third home run of the season to lead the Cougars (4-3) to a 7-1 win over Gonzaga University Friday at Posse Stadium in Pasco.

Parrish (2-0) allowed one run on two hits in the first inning, then settled down to dominate the Gonzaga (0-1) lineup. After giving up a one-out single to Kevin Taylor in the third, he did not allow another Gonzaga hit until the ninth inning.

Idaho high school basketball

Post Falls lost its Idaho State A-1 semifinal game to Eagle 64-58 Friday in Nampa.

Eagle (24-1) will meet district rival Centennial (23-4) in an all-Southern Idaho Conference state final tonight.

Post Falls (18-9) will take on Madison (23-2) for third place at 10 this morning PST, immediately following the Lake City-Highland game for fourth place. Lake City beat Borah 64-40.

Spokane 5, Beaver Valley 3

After trailing the first two periods, the numberfour ranked Braves came back with three goals in the third period to upset the top-ranked Nitehawks.
