Coles’ 1,000th Helps Gar-Pal Past Pomeroy

Logan Coles reached 1,000 career points Saturday just when Garfield-Palouse needed it most.

Coles’ second basket in the second quarter gave him the milestone. His Vikings (18-5) used their five-point edge in the second quarter to rally past Pomeroy 47-41 in the District 9-B tournament at Walla Walla Community College.

Coles added nine rebounds and four assists to send GarPal into Tuesday’s semifinal at Washington State University. The Vikings play Waitsburg at 8 p.m.

Nick Cox scored 15 of his 23 in the middle quarters for the Pirates (15-8), who meet Jubilee Christian Academy at 2:30 Tuesday in a loser-out.

Matt Wyatt and Mike Ruzicka had 11 rebounds apiece, and Ryan Leid scored 10 in the first quarter to help the Cardinals (16-6) defeat the Warriors (7-13).

Chris Pearson added five assists and Jesse McCaw nine rebounds for Waitsburg, which shot 52 percent from the field. Adrian Garcia had 15 second-half points and four steals for Jubilee of Walla Walla, making its first appearance at district.

Heather Cox scored eight in the first quarter and Sara Driscoll finished with six steals as the third-ranked Nighthawks (21-2) defeated the Panthers (6-17).

T-O shot 52 percent from the floor but missed 18 of 28 free throws. The Nighthawks advance to a semifinal at 6:30 Tuesday night at WSU against Waitsburg.

Mandy McCann hit 6 of 8 free throws in the second quarter and added seven steals for Asotin, which plays Garfield-Palouse at 1 p.m. Tuesday in a loser-out.

Waitsburg’s Wendy Jones added five steals and four assists. Holly Shelden had seven rebounds and Tasha Swinney six steals for Gar-Pal, which missed 11 of 15 from the line.

Christie Emory had 12 rebounds and shot 5 of 9 from the floor as the Gorillas (10-14) qualified for the District 7-B tournament and eliminated the Crusaders (10-15) at Mt. Spokane High.

Davenport shot 34 percent from the floor and 38 percent from the line. The Gorillas, as Bi-County seed No. 4, open district play at 7:45 p.m. Monday at Spokane Community College against Panorama No. 1 Selkirk (20-3).

Sara Montague had nine rebounds for NWC, which closed within two points in the third quarter after trailing by eight.
