Three Will Battle For Playoff Spots

All girls favorites won as the Great Northern League season ended Saturday, forcing two days of playoffs to break a three-way tie for fifth place.

Deer Park, Colville and Pullman all lost to finish 4-10 in league, tied for fifth. The top six advance to the District 7-2A tournament at Mt. Spokane High, so one team must be weeded out.

Pullman won a coin flip earlier this week to sit out until Tuesday. DP and Colville play at Chewelah on Monday, with the winner earning the fifth seed. Pullman plays Monday’s loser at Medical Lake on Tuesday, with the winner advancing as No. 6.

Brianne Jolley scored seven in the third quarter and the second-ranked, league-champion Eagles (19-1, 14-0) defeated the host Indians (8-12 overall) for their 18th consecutive win.

Colville’s Jamie Entwistle had five rebounds.

Lakeside has a district bye until 7 p.m. Saturday.

League scoring champion Carey Sauer scored 26, hitting 10 of 10 from the line and two 3-pointers, as the ninth-ranked Grizzlies (16-4, 10-4) defeated the host Greyhounds (8-12, 4-10).

Sauer added 18 rebounds, while Pullman’s Ali Johnston had 13 rebounds.

Newport, the No. 3 seed, opens district at 2:45 p.m. Friday against the No. 6 in a loser-out.

Bernice Stime had 10 rebounds and the sixth-ranked Rams (16-3, 12-2) defeated the visiting Cardinals (3-17, 0-14) to wrap up their second-place season.

Riverside has an openinground bye at district and plays at 2 p.m. Saturday. ML finished with a 13-game losing skid.

Chrissy Oneal added seven rebounds and Jacki Albertson five steals for Chewelah.

Chewelah is No. 4 to district and plays a loser-out at 7:15 Friday night against the No. 5.

Brent Cummings had 28 points and 12 rebounds and the fourth-ranked, league-champion Greyhounds (17-3, 12-2) used a 10-0 fourth-quarter run to beat the visiting Grizzlies (10-10, 5-9).

The game was tied at 52 with 6 minutes left before Pullman started its run. Cummings finished 11 of 17 from the field. Newport’s Sean Mumford hit 7 of 7 from the floor.

Pullman has an opening-round district bye and plays at 8:45 p.m. Saturday. Newport, the fifth seed, plays a loser-out at 9 Friday night against No. 4 Colville.

Brandon Moore hit a basket with 2 seconds left to lift the visiting Cardinals (14-6, 11-3) over the Rams (6-14, 4-10).

ML worked for a final shot after Riverside had a turnover with 1:13 left. Riverside’s Matt Miller had 13 rebounds, 10 on the offensive end.

ML, the second seed, also has a district bye until 3:45 Saturday. Riverside is No. 6 and plays a loser-out against No. 3 Chewelah at 4:30 Friday.

Colville’s Eric Anderson added seven rebounds.
