Whitworth Wins Another League Title Win Over Ups Gives Pirates Berth In Naia Tourney

Reaching the national tournament is becoming the routine for the Whitworth Pirates, but it’s still exciting every time it happens.

“That was the goal all year, to get to nationals and win the league. The guys we have are good people, they work really hard… . It’s satisfying to see that kind of group make it,” Pirates coach Warren Friedrichs said Saturday after Whitworth defeated Puget Sound 71-59.

The victory gives the Pirates their fifth NCIC championship this decade (‘90, ‘91, ‘92, ‘96 and now ‘98). With it goes an automatic berth to the NAIA Division II national tournament in Nampa, Idaho, March 11-17.

Before heading to southern Idaho, however, Whitworth has a bit more business at hand. The Pirates will play Pacific Lutheran in an NCIC tournament game Wednesday at the Whitworth Fieldhouse. Should the Pirates win, as they have at home, they will play a seeding game against the winner of Wednesday’s George Fox-Lewis & Clark game at Whitworth on Saturday.

Regardless of the outcome, Whitworth’s regular-season championship has it going to the national tournament, where its best finish was second place in 1996.

George Fox, coming into Saturday’s game against Pacific Lutheran, had an opportunity to tie Whitworth for first place but lost 86-75.
