Residents Want New Post Office

From Staff And Wire Reports

Worley residents have been planning a combination senior center, community center and city hall, and now they’d like to a post office to locate there.

They’re petitioning the U.S. Postal Service to use the proposed new building. The current post office is cramped, lacks adequate parking and isn’t accessible to the handicapped, according to the petition.

The city must raise $135,000 in pledges and donations for the community center to meet the terms of a hoped-for state grant. So far, $70,000 has been raised, said project coordinator Gayle Dyer.

The grant application date has been extended for one year, until March 1999. That will give the city time to plan an additional 1,500 square feet for post office or other office space that can be leased, Dyer said. The city will also have time to conduct an election to approve a project loan.
