Saxon Wrestlers Place At State Three Ferris High Grapplers Finish In Top Eight In Weight Classes

Three Ferris Saxons were among the 19 Greater Spokane League wrestlers who placed among the top eight in last weekend’s 4A state tournament at Mat Classic X.

Ryan Ellis, this year’s district champion and regional runner-up, finished second at 122 pounds to rival John Reese of Central Valley.

The two GSL foes met four times during the year, dividing their contests. Ellis finished 31-9 overall.

Teammates Jack Claros, 101, and Zack Moffat, 148, both placed eighth. It was Moffat’s second-straight top-eight finish at state.

Gonzaga Prep finished fourth as a team behind CV, Evergreen of Vancouver and Tahoma.

Bullpup sophomore Travis Pascoe finished first at 168 pounds. Three-time placers Chris Montgomery, 115, and Nick Bliss, 158, finished second and third respectively. Junior Sean Malone was sixth at 135, and junior Kyle Gleason was seventh at 178.

Cardinal seniors win medals

Three Medical Lake seniors from among the eight Cardinal participants in the 2A state wrestling tournament helped the team to 13th place.

Matt Parker, just third in the Great Northern League district tournament, finished second in state at 141 pounds, beating two No. 1 seeds and a No. 2 to reach the finals.

Four-time state qualifier Jesse Moroni completed his career with a third-straight top-six finish. At 122 pounds he was fourth in the state tournament, where he, too, had come as a No. 3 GNL seed.

Anthony Bianche took eighth at 190 pounds.

During the 3A tournament, Cheney sophomore Blake Falor placed eighth at 275 pounds.

And in the A-B tournament, Liberty-Spangle junior Dan Mewhinney finished fifth at 158.

Saxons enter post-season

Ferris Saxon basketball teams, tied for first during the Greater Spokane League regular season, begin postseason play tonight against South Side rival Lewis and Clark.

All four girls and boys teams are assured berths in the regional tournament next weekend in Yakima but are playing for the right to stay home for the first round of that tourney.

The second-seeded Saxon boys, who gained a share of their ninth league title since 1983, play the Tigers at 5:30 p.m. in the Arena.

Four regulars - juniors Chris Watts, Andre Atkins and Brad Hodl and senior Tom Servine - averaged in double figures during the year.

The top-seeded Saxon girls, winners of their first league title since 1984, play LC at 7:15 p.m.

Leading the way for Ferris was GSL scoring champion Amy George.

Lewis and Clark’s boys ousted Rogers 56-44 Tuesday night on the scoring of Pat Luce and Tyrees Donastorg. The Tiger girls defeated Shadle Park 42-37 behind Shannon Glotfelty and Deanna Ford.
