Sheahan To Sweat Out Cougar Victory; Locke Makes Book On Rose Bowl

What’s a Cougar victory worth today?

It could be worth some books for a children’s reading program.

What’s a loss going to cost?

A little embarrassment, if you’re state Rep. Larry Sheahan of Spokane.

Gov. Gary Locke has a bet with Michigan Gov. John Engler on the outcome of the game. The governor of the state with the losing team must donate books to a children’s reading program in the winning state.

“Regardless of the outcome of the game, the big winner will be literacy,” said Locke, who will be in Pasadena for the game.

Sheahan, whose 9th District includes Pullman and the Washington State University campus, accepted a different challenge called in from Michigan state Rep. Andrew Richner.

Sheahan, a WSU alum, will wear a University of Michigan sweat shirt on the floor of the Legislature one day if the Wolverines win. Richner, of Grosse Point, Mich., will wear a WSU sweat shirt on the Michigan House floor for a day if the Cougs win.

The day to pay off the bet is yet to be determined.

“I figured ‘Why not?”’ said Sheahan, who added he was confident that he won’t be the one wearing blue and maize.

“After 67 years, the Cougars ought to be ready to go.”
