Winifred Prouty Spokane

Funeral Mass for Winifred M. Prouty, 77, will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Prouty, who was born in Shreveport, La., died Monday.

In 1941 she married Robert Prouty.

She was raised in Wisconsin and moved to Spokane in 1970. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Prouty was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and the Golden Singles.

Her husband, Robert, died in 1981.

She is survived by a daughter, Tracey Prouty of Spokane; a brother, William Phillips of Denver; three granddaughters and two great-grandchildren.

Josephine Jones Spokane

Graveside service for Josephine Mary Jones, 87, will be at 1 p.m. today at Riverside Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Jones, who was a resident of Spokane for 52 years, died Monday.

She was the supervisor of reading for District 81 and retired after 38 years. She also taught piano and organ.

Ms. Jones received several educational honors including Pi Lambda Theta and Delta Kappa Gamma.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, Manito Presbyterian Church and the Spokane Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include a sister, Ann Jones of Spokane

Ida Keeney Spokane

Service for Ida M. Keeney, 82, will be at 2 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Cremation will follow.

Mrs. Keeney, who was born in Charlotte, N.C., died Saturday.

She worked as a telephone operator for Sacred Heart Medical Center, and had lived in Spokane for 33 years.

Mrs. Keeney was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and the Pope John Society.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph; two daughters, Billie Webb of Portland and Barbara Nicholson of Charlotte, N.C.

Carl Tillberg Spokane

Graveside service for Carl J. Tillberg, 91, will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Tillberg, who died Tuesday, was born in Loomis, Neb.

He moved to Sandpoint in 1946 and then to Spokane in the mid 1960s.

Mr. Tillberg worked as a green chain operator for sawmills and retired in 1971. He then worked part-time in landscaping.

He is survived by a daughter, Jane Weisz of Otis Orchards; and two grandchildren.

Adeline Zeller Spokane

Service for L. Adeline Zeller, 80, will be at 11 a.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Zeller, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Sunday.

She worked as a bookkeeper at Rogers High School and then at Shadle Park High School until 1975. She later retired from School District 81.

Mrs. Zeller taught Sunday school and Junior Church at First Baptist Church.

Her husband, Jerome, died in 1981.

Mrs. Zeller is survived by a daughter, Jeraldine Millinger of Strasburg, Pa., and three grandchildren.

Orrin Tyler Spokane

No service will be held for Orrin A. Tyler, 71, at his request. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Tyler, who was born in Pocatello, Idaho, died Monday.

He served in the Army during World War II and worked as a truck driver.

Mr. Tyler was a 45-year Spokane resident and was a member of the Eagles Lodge and a retired Teamster.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Wanda; a son, Pharis Tyler of California, Md.; a daughter, Leora Ryan of Spokane; and three grandchildren.

Carol (Patterson) Lee Spokane

Service for Carol Lee (Patterson) Lee, 47, will be at 1 p.m. today at the Shiloh Hills Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lee, who was born in Seattle, died Friday.

She graduated in 1968 from Edmonds (Wash.) High School and in 1972 married Robert Lee in Oakland, Calif.

Mrs. Lee was a homemaker and was a member of Shiloh Hills Ward Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she was the Relief Society President, Young Women’s President, Primary President and held the Stake Young Women’s Presidency.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Brandon and Bryce Lee, both of Spokane; a daughter, Amy Lee of Spokane; her mother, Delores Patterson of Edmonds; two brothers, Robert and Bradly Patterson, both of Seattle; three sisters, Cathy Griffiths of Edmonds, Barbara Chipman of Salt Lake City and Kristen Hunt of West Valley City, Utah.

Elsie (Griess) Schaefer Greenacres

Graveside service for Elsie (Griess) Schaefer, 92, is set for 11 a.m. today at Pines Mausoleum. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Schaefer, who was born in Glover, N.D., died Sunday.

She was a homemaker and lived in Spokane for 67 years.

Survivors include four daughters, Doris Williamson, Lola Scalero, Bonnie Mediaty and Nadine Anderson, all of Spokane; a son, Richard Schaefer of Greenacres; a sister, Hattie Lewis of Burbank, Calif.; two brothers, Harry Griess of Tacoma and Oscar Griess of Sacramento, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Jeremy Moore Spokane

Memorial service for Jeremy F. Moore, 20, will be at 1 p.m. today at Five Mile Community Church. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Moore, a lifetime Spokane resident, was killed Dec. 23.

He had worked in construction.

Survivors include a brother, Thomas Moore, stationed in Japan with the Navy.

Lola Genins Spokane

Memorial service for Lola Mae Genins, 87, will be at 1 p.m. today at Central United Methodist Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Genins, who was born in Elston, Mo., died Saturday.

She graduated in 1928 from high school in Jefferson City, Mo., and then taught in a one-room schoolhouse.

Mrs. Genins received her bachelor of arts degree from Central Missouri State Teachers College in 1938 and married R.J. Genins that same year in Elston.

In 1947 they moved to southeastern Missouri. She taught in Sikeston, Mo., and later in Wilmette, Ill.

Mrs. Genins moved to Spokane in 1960 and was a teacher for School District 81 until her retirement. She also worked as a substitute teacher for several years.

She received her Masters of Education from Whitworth College in 1980.

Mrs. Genins was a former president of the Women of Rotary; taught Sunday school, and was a member of Central United Methodist Church.

She was a member of the Spokane, Washington and National Education associations and the Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include her husband; a son, John Genins of Atlanta; a daughter, Amelia Windell of Spokane; a sister, Virginia Wilson of Topeka, Kan.; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Robert Peth Spokane

Graveside service for Robert H. Peth, 70, was Wednesday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Peth, who was born in Grand Junction, Colo., died Saturday.

He served in the Navy during World War II and moved to Spokane in 1962.

In 1952 he married Jennie Aburt.

Mr. Peth worked as a salesman for Harvey’s men’s clothing store and later retired.

His wife died in 1989.

He is survived by a son, Lawrence Peth of Tucson, Ariz.; and a sister, Elizabeth Mott of Grand Junction.

Sister Ancilla Winhard, O.P. Chewelah, Wash.

Vigil service for Sister Ancilla Winhard, 82, will be at 7 p.m. today at St. Mary of the Rosary Catholic Church in Chewelah. Service is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery in Spokane. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah is in charge of arrangements.

Sr. Winhard, who was born in Contwig, Germany, died Monday.

She made her religious profession as a Dominican Sister in Speyer, Germany in 1936 and came to the United States in 1938.

Her first mission was at St. Martins Hospital in Tonasket, Wash., where she worked in the dietary department for 16 years.

She returned to the hospital for another 14 years after utilizing her cooking skills at Mount Carmel Hospital in Colville and at the Dominican Sisters Provincialate in Kettle Falls, Wash.

In 1969 she came to St. Josephs Hospital in Chewelah. She retired in 1989.

Survivors include two nephews, Harold and Klaus Schweinfurth, both of Germany and a niece, Edith Ehrmann of Germany.

Onna Stewart Spokane

Memorial service for Onna L. Stewart, 48, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Spokane Valley United Methodist Church. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Stewart, a Spokane resident since 1978, died Monday.

She was born in Great Falls, Mont., and worked as a computer operator.

Survivors include her husband, Bernard Stewart Sr.; three sons, Jason Miller of Oahu, Hawaii, Bernard Stewart Jr. of Newport, Wash., and James Stewart of Kent, Wash.; four daughters, Linda Maak of Scappoose, Ore., Lois Yeager of Deer Park, DiAnna Miller of Newport, and Carrie Maak of Spokane; her mother, Donna Blue of Spokane; a brother, Eugene Wilson of Wishram, Wash.; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

John Ulmer Spokane

Memorial service for John C. Ulmer, 76, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hillyard Baptist Church. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ulmer, who was born in Brookhaven, Miss., died Tuesday.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

In 1944 he married Lois Pate in Corpus Christi, Texas, and they moved to Spokane in 1946.

Mr. Ulmer worked as a carpenter and locksmith for the Mead School District. He retired in 1987.

He was a member of Hillyard Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ron and Alan Ulmer, both of Spokane; five daughters, Jeanie Kuraitis of Alberta, Pam Baldwin of Spokane, Glenda Ulmer of Woodland Park, Colo., Jessica Ulmer of Caracas, Venezuela and Marsha Ulmer of Seattle; and seven grandchildren.

Harold Roberton Jr. Gig Harbor, Wash.

Private burial for Harold “Robby” Edward Roberton Jr., 78, was at Peone Prairie Cemetery. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 10 at Peninsula Baptist Church in Gig Harbor. Haven of Rest Funeral Home in Gig Harbor is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Roberton, who was born in Medford, Mass., died Dec. 21.

He was raised in Medford and graduated from East Hartford High School in Connecticut.

Mr. Roberton received his bachelor of arts degree in Chemical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

In 1942 he joined the Army Air Corps and served in World War II in the Pacific and in the Korean War.

As an Air Force officer he served as a navigator and later a meteorologist.

Mr. Roberton, after returning to Spokane, worked as a loan and trust officer for Old National Bank from 1964 to 1972. He was an investment counselor for Murphy Favre from 1973 to 1976 and then owned his own business, Wakely and Roberton from 1976 to 1981.

He moved to Gig Harbor nine years ago.

His wife of 35 years, Juanita, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Jean; two daughters, Heidi Penfield of Colbert and Jan Daily of Spokane; two sons, Richard Roberton of Seattle and Mark Roberton of Spokane; four stepsons, Michael and Douglas Lyle, both of Gig Harbor, Patrick Lyle of Graham, Wash., and Kevin Lyle of Houston; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Bernice Nelson Fairfield

Memorial service for Bernice E. Nelson, 80, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Moran United Methodist Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Nelson, who was born in Randall, Minn., died Friday.

She moved to this area in 1955 and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Nelson was a member of the Moran United Methodist Church, Moran Ladies Aide and the Fernwood (Idaho) Community Church.

Her husband, William, died in 1993.

She is survived by two daughters, Beverly Anderson of St. Maries and Jeanette Johnson of Spokane; a son, Marvin Nelson of Fernwood; a brother, Derald Johnson of Greenbluff; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Allen Young Spokane

Memorial service for Allen F. Young, 47, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Charles Catholic Church. Private burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Young, who was born in Spokane, died Dec. 15., while vacationing in Hemet, Calif.

He worked for several years as a drywall finisher and then finished a course in construction cost estimating.

Survivors include a son, Allen Munkers of Spokane; his mother, Phyllis Young of Spokane; two brothers, William Young of Spokane and Arthur Young Jr. of Tum Tum, Wash.; and two sisters, Mary Hawkins of Spokane and Loretta Jean Boyd of Medford, N.J.

Lillian Sweitzer Spokane

No service will be held for Lillian L. Sweitzer at her request. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sweitzer, who was born in Wheeling, W.Va., died Sunday. She was 82.

She worked as a bookkeeper in retail stores and was also a homemaker. Mrs. Sweitzer lived in Spokane for 17 years.

Survivors include a son, Wesley Sweitzer, and a daughter, Barbara August, both of Spokane.

Dorene Struchen Portland

Memorial service for Dorene Mae Struchen, 61, will be held at a later date. Heritage Cremation in Portland is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Struchen, who was born in Spokane, died Dec. 22.

In 1956 she married Richard Struchen in Coeur d’Alene.

She was a homemaker and moved to Portland 17 years ago from Spokane.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Kathy Fairborn of Spokane; two sons, Rick and Larry Struchen, both of Spokane; three sisters, Claudia O’Conner of Sterling Heights, Mich., Carolyn Riley of Waco, Texas, and Charlene Kosanke of Spokane; a brother, Chuck Kuykendall of Coupeville, Wash., and three grandchildren.

Letha Peters Rice, Wash.

Memorial service for Letha Peters, 95, will be at 11 a.m. Jan. 10 at the United Methodist Church in Colville, Wash. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Peters, who was born in Lovell, Wyo., died Dec. 13.

In 1919 she married Tom Peters in Billings, Mont., and they moved to the Chewelah area.

They moved to Rice in 1934.

Mrs. Peters was a member of Quilbisascot Grange, Past Worthy Matron of Pine Tree Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Lady Democrats of Stevens County and the Rhododendron Ladies Club of Rice.

Her husband died in 1983.

She is survived by a daughter, Betty Jo Birney of Palm Bay, Fla.; a sister, Doris Danilson of Burlington, Wash.; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
