20-Year Term Sought For Rapist Of Teen

A man has pleaded guilty to first-degree rape in an attack on a 13-year-old girl abducted at a Federal Way bus stop in September.

Jonathan Mark Swanson, 33, also pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree robbery Friday in King County Superior Court.

Prosecutors are recommending a 20-year sentence for Swanson, with seven-year sentences for each of the two robberies - at a convenience store and a sandwich shop - served concurrently with the rape penalty. Sentencing is scheduled Feb. 13 before Judge Jeanette Burrage.

Swanson abducted the girl Sept. 10 as she waited alone at a bus stop. He indicated he had a gun, and later assaulted her at a motel.

Swanson has a record of more than 20 misdemeanor and felony convictions.

First-degree rape meets the criteria for a “strike” under Washington’s two-strikes law for sex offenders, but none of Swanson’s previous convictions constitutes a strike under that law or the three-strikes law for felony offenders.

This case marks Swanson’s first sex-crime conviction.
