Ferris Steps Up; Nc Stops Skid

GSL girls

Perfect record or not, it didn’t appear Rogers was quite ready to join the elite of Greater Spokane League girls basketball Saturday night.

The Pirates had 24 turnovers, which led to 32 Ferris points - and it could have been worse if the Saxons didn’t shoot like they were still enjoying Christmas break - in a 59-47 Saxons’ victory at Ferris.

“Turnovers, that was the story of the game,” Rogers coach Drew Vanderpool said. “In the first half it was man pressure, doubling up on the ball. I don’t know if they had enough confidence, they panicked at times.”

Amazingly, the Pirates (5-1 overall, 3-1 GSL) almost overcame a miserable first half.

While the Pirates were giving the ball away - five turnovers before their first shot - the Saxons (4-2, 3-1) couldn’t make a shot.

Ferris was 4 of 18 in the first quarter that ended tied at 8. The Saxons improved to 9 of 14 in the second for a 29-19 halftime lead. Seventeen Rogers giveaways resulted in 18 Ferris points in the first half.

Rogers battled back and trailed 32-30 after Angel Fairbanks knocked down a 3-pointer from the left wing. A minute later, with 2:51 to go in the third quarter, Fairbanks was at the line with a chance to tie but she missed both free throws.

Rogers then closed out the quarter with five consecutive turnovers that five different Saxons turned into baskets for a 43-30 lead.

The margin was pushed to 46-30 early in the fourth quarter before the Pirates reeled off 10 straight points, eight from the line. Then the Saxons pulled away.

“It was a first game,” Ferris coach Art Rojas said. “We haven’t played in two weeks. The offense was spotty but the defense was there.”

Amy George was the only one of the Saxons to consistently find her range, scoring 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 6 of 8 free throws. She also had nine rebounds.

“It was hard,” George said. “They don’t give up. You’re always scrambling to defense them. They always hustle. We were slow, we didn’t pass and drive, we just stood around.”
